My bitch had a c-section, 4 puppies and mum doing fine.  Later in the evening she started having contractions and passed  a placenta.  I contacted the emergency vet straight away, as I wasn,t expecting this.  He spoke to the vet that had performed the op and told me that she believes she had left two placentas,  because they were still attached to the uterus and needed to be expelled naturally.  (my bitch expelled three complete placentas) I haven't heard of this before and believed that everything was removed at the time of op.  Could having contractions done any damage internally?  Is this normal practice?

Hi Guest

Bitches continue to contract for a couple of days or so - I believe this aids the uterus to reduce to its normal size.  I have never heard of leaving placenta's in but my girls have only had the odd caesarian so it is not a subject I can really comment on.

Some vets believe that leaving a placenta in is good & will help the uterus contract down to normal size.
She should pass everything & will still discharge as will any bitch post whelping.
