could someone please tell me which is the smallest yorkie. Is it the toy or the miniature.

Hi susan
I think youll find the toy is the smallest.  there is also a teacup which is even smaller, but not really recognised.  hope that helps.

In the UK there is no such thing as a "toy" or "miniature" Yorkie.  The breed standard says "up to 7lb"!  They are part of the Toy Group, like the chihuahua and the pomeranian etc, but badly bred ones can be the size of donkeys!
Back street breeders will come up with all sorts of words to make their inferior puppies sound more valuable.  Please don't get taken in!! :(

Not sure where you are speaking from Susan but if it is the UK there is no such thing as a Yorkshire Terrier of any size they are just Yorkshire Terriers and the usual size should be between 5 & 7lb, but like all dogs when the litter is born there may be some who are very small and some who are too big. If you are thinking of buying go to a respected breeder and pick a puppy that is the size of most of the litter, not the smallest or the largest, that way you have a chance of an adult of the correct size.

In the USA there seems to be a habit for trying to breed very tiny dogs in a lot of breeds, but I would avoid going for anything described as Tiny or Teacup, in fact anything with a prefix that does not appear in the breeds standard. The reason for advising against buying dogs described like this is because some breeders will breed undersize to undersize to try and get a tiny specimen and it is rare for dogs bred thus to be healthy.

I must vouch up for Jackie in that we have what was classed as a mini yorkie (i knew no such breed but hubby didn't who bought it) and if there is a bug about he'll catch it. He has already spent time in the vets on a drip because his little body just can't cope half the time yet my other dog can bounce of anything.
To see them both inflicted with the same thing and yet one is floored and the other isn't is sad. (They are different breeds but in my eyes he does suffer for being extra small).
