We have three male uncastrated dogs (a GSD 6yrs, a terrier, 2.5yrs and a GSP 2yrs) and it looks like we will be getting our first bitch this summer, also a GSP. We did previously have a bitch but as she came from a rescue centre was already sterilised.

We have no plans to breed and therefore will be having her sterilised, I just have a few questions - from what age to bitches have their first seasons? When would be the best time to have her sterilised? I am so used to boys I am feeling a bit nervous about having a girl! Are their any real differences in character that it is possible to generalise about?

We have two reasonably dominant males, at home the hierarchy is established with the older dog at the top, the GSP is not the most confident dog but we have done a lot of work with him, when we first got him he refused to play with other dogs at puppy class...after many hours he is much better.  I know that all my males are quite different so I realise that females can also be very different - I just wondered if anyone had any expereinces...

I have 3 dogs and 2 bitches, they all get along well but I would say the boys are more lovable and fun. They tend to be more tolerant of things as well ,where as the girls tend to bark more.
Not sure if this is the same with other dogs as mine are all springers.
Sandie.
