Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Why do some male dogs do this?
- By sibeluver03 [us] Date 04.05.04 20:51 UTC
Hi everyone,

I want to warn anyone before I actually ask my question. It is a silly question but a serious one at that. Please excuse me if you believe I am being rude or anything, I did not mean it to sound so.

My little boy dog is a happy one, so spoiled. I love him to death. But there is something that bugs me. It doesn't bother me, but it is a bit embarassing[sp?]. Little Houdini, and other male dogs, will be sitting happily and quietly, looking as sweet as ever. But his little manhood is saying hello to the world. Not a lot of it, just the tip. Why is this? Why does my six month old boy and other male dogs show off their manhood for no reason? When Houdini does it, there is never an in season female around as my girl (his mother) is spayed. Does anyone know why little boy dogs do this?

I just want to remind you, I have no problem with this, am just curious. Again, please don't think I'm trying to be rude or anything. :)

It just seems to be something they do! I've never known a single male dog not do it at some stage! When they're feeling particularly happy - whoops! Out it pops! He'll probably grow out of it ...

Sometimes it is the way they are sitting, sometimes it is an increase in the blood flow to the organ. All males have this happen, dogs, humans and all mammals and it is normal and natural. No one need be embarrassed by this whether it is a young dog or a pubescent lad.

Thanks for the quick replies! I didn't mean I was embarrassed that it happened, I just meant that if someone outside of my family saw it and said something, I would just be like, "Oh, excuse Houdini there, he's a bit happy today!" :D I know it is a natural thing in all mammals including humans. There is nothing to be done to stop it, so I guess I'll just go along with it. I still believe it is silly, but it a way its kind of cute. (Not in a bad way!!!) Again, thanks for the fast replies, I appreciate it!

Guess people do notice, but if they are dog people they will say something like put the lipstick away, if they are not, they will not admit they are looking in that direction ;)

Your lucky it's just the tip :D
My 14 month Stafford has his showing must of the time when he's sat down. Also when he's getting a lot of fuss, usually by other people
It doesn't bother me most of the time, :) but it does tend to get embarrassing around certain people.
But thats males for you.

Michelle.

This happened to us as well, just as it was our turn to go into the show ring!! (not just the tip either!).  Needless to say, I ran him off in the opposite direction quick smart, and the exercise seemed to work - just made it into the ring on time!

I could tell a really good story about one of my Boxers getting excited then stuck and what happened next but it'd be too x rated. Happened on Christmas morning too :D
