hi bit of advice please...my 1yr old CKCS gets really sticky eyes and it stains the fur a dark brown colour .someone told me it could be the food she is given but all 3 of mine are fed the same ...i clean her eyes twice dailey any tips ?

It's due to too many tears being produced & not unuusal due the the large eye required by the breed standard

Mine tend to have a bit when they are you & I use homoeopathic eye drops from Doreen Paige & her stain remover to keep the eyes clear & remove the staining

Never heard of the food being blamed

If one of my dogs has a problem & use the drops on a daily basis until it clears up.

This is different to conjunctivitis is a different matter & needs veterinary attention of course

Hi Inca, What you are describing sounds like red yeast (ptyrosporin) .A lot of white coat breeds particularly maltese get this problem round the eyes, this is a warm moist area ideal for low grade infections of this sort. I know about it because my Min Sch. had a similar problem this winter which also affected feet and beard, Vet  was not helpul. I understand adding a small amount of vitamin c to diet helps but have not tried it yet. Also try making  up a saline solution, dissolve 1 level tbs salt to pint boiling water and allow to cool then bathe eyes with this daily and dry as well as you can. One piece of cotton wool for each eye. Would like to know how you get on. ;-)

Thanks it's not that .. it's just tear stains that i know are very much expected with a large eyed breed ... just wanted any tips for cleaning really as everyone has different tips :) although i have heard of ptysosporin but have no experience of it ...thanks for the info :)

We were recommended to give our poodle a tea spoon of natural yoghurt as this would help prevent any staining.  No idea if it actually works (she's only a pup), but she loves the yoghurt, so she gets it as a treat!  :)
