i want to do a dog behaviour course at home, and whilst looking through dogs monthly found this one that dee woodcock runs (she answers behaviour questions in dogs monthly).

www.animalcarecollege.co.uk

that is the one!
I was thinking of doing the intermediate dog behaviour then advanced then learning about when behaviourists go to owners homes and sort out the dogs problem eg how to diagnose dogs etc.

has anyone heard anything about these dog behaviour courses, are they any good??

thanks!

I did the animal care colleges "Understanding the canine human interface" years ago with John Fisher and found it very interesting

I'm currently working on the Canine Behaviour Centre's dog psychology home course.  It's aimed for beginners and very interesting.  They present you with case studies at the end to test what you know that you can send off to be 'marked.'

(p.s. the canine behaviour centre do have a website - I can dig it out for you if you are interested?)

How do you rate this course Metal Werewolf? I've been doing it for about 2 years now (never seem to have any time) but I think its not good enough to be able to set up as a behaviour therapist when you have finished although they suggest that you can. I certainly wouldn't take my dog to anyone who has just done this course.

If it is like the one I did ,what it does do is to teach you to learn about, and read dogs and get you started rather than provide a "qualification" or enough knowledge to set up as a behaviourist.  I gained a "Distinction" under JF which I was delighted with but to really be useful I feel you need years of experience with various breeds as well as the more formal training that these courses give.

I totally agree with you Christine.  All the "bits of paper" in the world are no substitute for hands on experience of loads of dogs, loads of breeds etc etc etc;  unfortunately a lot of problem behaviour does not necessarily fit into a nice "box" with an "off the shelf" solution as programmes need to be as individual as the dog, the environment and, most importantly be shaped to fit the competence of the owner.

But all study is valuable.
