Hello,
I have a 9 mth collie with a list of issues as long as my arm!
I have always had collies and dogs as a child so am use to alsorts, this is my first dog as an adult.
this collie has me at my witts end!
My main issue at the curret time is on thursday i was trying to get him in the car, (he hates cars) he escaped from his harness, i ended up running all over the village trying to catch him, which really is not a good situation.
Anyway this has left me scared stiff the same thing is going to happen again.
Yestserday dh tried to take him out, and again the same thing happend.
I am so scared for my dog, Up until this week he had been comming along ok with his walking, however it has always been hard walking him as he pulls really badly, no so much with the harness mind.
He also jumps at people when out for a walk and goes totally mad at passing cars, Sorry i have so many issues with him at the mo, hes not really in my good   books, but i love him dearly!!
So what do i do about the harness thing can i get a full body harness or something? Any ideas?
I am going to try and get hold of a behaviouers this week to as i think some one to one will really help him.
He can do simple commands, like sit, off, paw and drop and he is played with for hours on end.
Sorry to dron on!! Any advise would be good.
Thanks

Collies are not the easiest of dogs to live with unless you have a few acres and half a dozen sheep or another suitable activity that will satisfy their working instincts.  It is not unusual for collie owners to be at their wits end on occasions, myself included. :D

One of mine doesn't like going in the car so I carry her to the car and put her in without a fuss.  She is fine once she is in there.
I'm not really sure what you mean about the harness without knowing what sort you have now.  If it is one to make it easier to walk him then I'd stick with it.

You say he is played with for hours on end.  Do you train him or teach him things during play?  Try clicker training, it's a lot of fun and more constructive than just play.

One way to teach him not to jump on people is to make absolutely sure that no one rewards him for doing it, yourself included.  Lots of attention when he jumps up, even if it's a telling off or a 'get down' is enough reward for some dogs to ensure that they do it again.  If you have taught him to sit, then one of the best ways I have found to teach a dog not to jump on me is to ask him to sit instead and reward that and then to teach him not to jump on other people I will ask him to sit and pass the reward to the person to give to him if remains in the sit.  If he is running over to people off the lead and jumping on them then you need to maybe use a long line to prevent this and work hard on his recall.  There are lots of tips on recall on some recent threads.

It would be an idea to get some help with his training.  Make sure you find someone who is experienced and uses reward training and doesn't suggest punishment or aversives.  Collies deserve the best. ;)
