Our Stella has just turned 3 and we would like her to have puppies..we have been given a bit of information by friends who also have staffs about when they are ready for mating, but could someone tell us when is the best time in the 'season' for her to mate successfully....as any staff owner will agree they are the most beautiful dogs to own, 'stella' has been with us since she was 9 weeks old, since our youngest daughter was nearly 2 and they are like twins...anyones help and advice would be much appreciated..thank you.

To start with contact one of the breed clubs to ascertain what health tests should be carried out before you consider breeding. Buy the Book of the Bitch. Speak to the bitches breeder to find out the sort of dog you should be looking at as a stud and they will also tell you if your bitch is of sufficient quality to be bred. Make sure you have enough people who really want one of the pups, because you would not want any to end up in rescue. Make sure you have enough funds for vets fees and the special food and if you work that you will be able to take time off work to look after the litter. Sure there is more you will need to know, oh! Yes, when during the season, this differs between different bitches and as a novice you may be best to have blood tests done from about day 9, the vet will advise as you may have to travel a long way for a suitable stud you don't want to go at the wrong time.
