Wheeler cleverly decided to rip open a bag of mowed grass and play with it. Im not sure if he's eaten any. If he has will he be alright? He seems fine now but we heard of a goat that ate mowed grass and blew up
:(

Mowed grass clippings are dangerous for horses as they develop mold within minutes plus it's just too rich sometimes and too much all at once. Mold can kill a horse. But you didn't ask about horses did you. LOL.  Now, dogs.... I'm not sure. I wouldn't think it would be good for them. They'd be getting a lot all at once probably, not like they do when they graze a little bit on growing grass. It might wad up in their esophagus, stomach, intestines and cause a problem. Plus, we have to be careful about fertilizers and such if used. I know....I have the same problem with my dogs sometimes. I have to holler, "Leave it!" Sorry I can't be more positive on this, but just in case, I'd try to discourage it. Probably as he was mostly playing, he might not have really eaten too much. I don't think a little would hurt.

Hi Sara, My dog eats small amounts of grass all the time when I am mowing the lawn with no ill effects except a green beard. :-D. I try to discourage her but she insists on hoovering up any bits left by the mower. Once when emptying the compost bin (full of green slime..my poor attempt at compost) and digging it in I went to answer the phone, a few moments later I was followed in by a slimy green schnauzer who had rolled in and eaten some of the compost. She was not even sick! Her beard took some time to recover though as did my carpet. In the wild dogs would eat their prey stomach content and all, so they would naturally eat some grass that way.

Hi, my dog also likes to eat newly mown grass too.  Doesn't seem to have any harmful effects.

My puppy plays with and eats lots of bits of mowed grass at the park and it doesnt do him any harm. I should think the most it would do is make them sick

Thanks everybody for the reassurance. Reddoor, I know what you mean about the new breeds of ''green slimey dogs''! :D Wheeler looked like the grinch after his rooting in the bin bag :D

Fresh mowings are not a problem to either horses or dogs or other animals however age makes the grass ferment hence it gives horses etc colic :(  Also you will be unaware if the grass has been treated with chemicals which may be toxic to your dog.    If any symptoms were to appear they would be fairly immediate, it is best in general not to allow dogs to eat this type of material.
