Hi, I wonder if anyone can advise me on feeding my standard poodle Alfie. He's just over three months and I've had different advice from breeders, trainers and vets and am confused by it all. He's my first dog so I don't have any previous experience to rely on.
Breeder recommended Nature diet mixed with dried food. The vet says put him on dried food only and leave it down to him all the time because he's a wee bit under weight. The trainer says feed him at set meal times only.
I took the vets advice and started feeding him Nutrience complete food. Now he's barely eating any of it at all. Should I persevere with that or should I change him onto Nature diet as he loved that and I had no problems getting him to eat at all when I put that down to him. Help please, very confused!!
I would go back to using the naturediet if he liked that as suggested by your breeder. Leaving food down all the time does not work for every dog. For some dogs it would mean they were over fed, I have one or two who would eat until they were ill if they had constant access to food, others might well eat even less than they normally would because food is too easily come by. I would go back to feeding purely at meal times.

Be guided by your breeder and use the food s/he said. If you have concerns about his weight ask the breeder - could be a developmental stage s/he has with her dogs, could be something or nothing. The breeders experience will provide a strategy.

Naturediet is one of the best foods you can feed your dog so I'd go back to it especially as he was eating it all straight away.
Leaving food down for a dog will usually make them picky eaters. They will snack and never eat a proper meal. Far better to give it at set mealtimes and remove any that he leaves straight away. Don't be tempted to give it again until the next mealtime. Also food is an excellent way to reward your pup during training so you need to keep it valuable. :)
