More daft questions from the Tribe - if you mate Downhill Sally to Applecross Johnny, what affix will the pups have? I think they take the bitches affix.

A litter takes the affix of the breeder not either sire of dam. So if your affix was Folklore and you owned Downhill Sally you would add Folklore to the end making the dam's name Downhill Sally of Folklore and the puppy's name would be Folklore Fred

Best wishes, John

Further to John's answer (which is exactly right!) if the owner of Downhill Sally doesn't have an affix, the puppies will either have names like Sweet Susie or Maisie's Girl, or the Kennel Club will add one of its own Ken..... affixes, making the pup Kenmilltri Fred. The possession of an affix is one indication of how serious the breeder is.

Are the KC adding Ken........ onto all pups without an affix now - I thought it was only those who did not have an acceptable name and the owners had not given alternatives?

I don't know if it's all pups without an affix, but it often seems to be where only one name has been put forward - like 'Fred' - so the KC put on Ken.... because the name has to be at least two words.

Thanks everyone. :)
