Does anyone have any experience in seperating an entire dog and a bitch in season?  I have a two year old bulldog bitch due in season next month and a five month old staffy.  I am not prepared to take ANY risks in her getting pregnant it would be my worst nightmare so I am just starting to think of how to seperate them.  I will be getting my boy castrated eventually but not untill he is fully mature.  One option is for him to stay with friends, but three weeks seems such a long time for him to be away from home :( I don't want to have her spayed as I would like a litter out of her to keep a puppy back as a show prospect.  Any ideas?
Thanks for reading!

I have always kept entire dogs and bitches and it can be a bit of a nightmare when the bitches come into season. I usually have to keep the bitches in one room (dining room which has access to the garden) and the dogs in the rest of the house with access to the dog yard. the dining room is at the other end of the house from the area the dogs use and the outside areas are independently fenced and screened.

I also have a range of gates and barriers that come into use and for the three weeks my house is like fort knox !!. It is stressfull - the boys howl, lose condition, pee up everthing and occasional squabble amongst themselves too. I also have kennels and if I have to go out for any length of time during the day ( like to a show) the boys go into the kennels. I try not to do this too often as being house dogs they always get very stressed in the kennels.

I have kept both entire sexes for nearly 20 years and (touch wood) hav'nt had any accidents yet ! BUT you do need to be extra vigilant and separate them from day 1 of the season.I usually swab my bitches around the time I think they are coming in.

I have an entire dog and bitch.  They had to be kept seperated.  She would stay in the kitchen (easy to mop up her blood and easy access to the garden) and he was kept in the livingroom.  My dog chewed through door frames to try and get to her.  Unfortunately he did get to her but we are better prepared now as she was in season when we got her and we weren't told.  We have bought a dog control gate now so that they can be seperated more effectively.

It will be a nightmare especially in her second week when she is ready for mating as she will also try to get to the male.  He will probably cry, howl and pee on everything.  Have you got any family or friends who might be willing to take him on for you for a few weeks while she is in season?

yeah I think that would be the best plan as it would probably be more stressful for him here rather than staying away from home.  How do you prepare a good friend for nearly 3 stone of hyperactive young staffi though? hehehe I foresees some fallings out ahead........specially if he has wind like he has this morning LOL :)

I don't think you can can you :)

My mum and dad were all prepared for taking my Jas when Tam comes into season.  Unfortunately she seems to have a four month cycle and my parents have gone to South Africa for 3 weeks :(

We weren't expecting her to come into season till June she came back into season in April.

I must have been lucky so far. I have a Staffie bitch, I kept a male pup from her first litter. The first season after the pups, my male was about 6 month, he showed no interest throughout the season, (must add I was still careful). Her season just gone he was 12 months, and I thought we were going to have loads of trouble, as everyone else seems to have. But we sailed through it. He showed no interest the first week or so, then obviously started to think she smelled nice, so he would sniff round her, but she was having none of it. They were only ever in the same room if I was there, he never ever did anything more than sniff and wag his tail, He never tried to mount her once. If I went upstairs the were in separate rooms.
They went in the garden separately, and when I went out she would be in a room she couldn't open and he was caged. same as on a night. He never cried, howled or mooched about, and he certainly didn't so off his food or cock his leg where he shouldn't.
Maybe he'll be totally different next time, as he gets older. My other pup is 7 months coming up, so she'll be due in season anytime, so I'll soon find out. I'll be prepared for the worst.

Michelle.
