Last week i got talking to a bloke with a retriever which had a cough, (I know nothing about KC) i had a quick thought on it but dismissed it thinking if it had it surely the bloke wouldn't be out with it.
Anyway Dolly has developed a cough and coughed up flem this morning, she has an appointment in the morning at the vets.
What will they do? and also will our other dog inevitably catch it too?

Thanks.

Yes it is contagious if it is KC so your other dog may catch it too.
Try contacting Mitch as her pup recently had it and as far as I am aware her other two didnt catch it

Thanks lel, the more i've read the more i think it's likely she has it, bit unsure what to do about the pup pickles, vet should advise tomorrow.
The bloke wants shooting though. :(

I know it's infuriating, but it's exactly the same as people going out and about when they have a cold or flu.

Hi Mygirl,
As Lel said my pup Rio is just getting over it.
All 3 of my dogs were in kennels for a weekend the begining of April. A week later my 6 month old pup was coughing as if she had something stuck in her throat, which I thought she had.
It was Easter weekend so it was 5 days later when she went to the vets, who told me it was kennel cough.
She was given an injection, and I was told to keep her in and not let her get excited, which aggravates it.
My concern was my 6 week pregnant bitch, so I kept her in a totally different room permanantly.(Ruby that is) A few days later Rio was just as bad, and my male of 14 months Toesy was showing slight symptoms, runny nose sneezing but no coughing. I took them both back and they got a five day course of antibiotic's. Toesy's has been ok since, Ruby never caught it luckly, but with Rio, even though I thought it had cleared up completely, (as she didn't cough for a few days) her coughing returned after her first walk. I've been back to the vets, and he doesn't think she's got an infection to pass on to other dogs as her lungs and chest is clear. He just thinks her throat is inflammed, she is now on steroids for 12 days. If that doesn't work, he said he'll have to find out why,as it should of cleared up. So touch wood the steroids will do the trick.
Does your dog seem like she's trying to bring something up, as if something is stuck, if so it's most likely KC. As you have another dog there is a good chance she will get it. Unless you separate them, you might be lucky like me. In normal cases, it will actually clear up without treatment, (or so I've read) It's just like us having a cold, as long as they don't get a secondry infection. I just couldn't take any chances with having a pregnant bitch.
Hope all goes well at the vets tommorrow. :)

Michelle.

PS You can give them Childrens Benylin (sp) cough mixture to sooth the throat.

I understand that i just wish he'd have thought before taking his dog out. I think i'm decent enough not to go into an old folks home with flu and i personally would not let my dog out with KC knowing it's highly contagious.
So infuriated i maybe at the lack of common sense and i still think he should be shot :)

Sorry Michelle the above wasn't in reply to you.

Thank you very much i feel more at ease now, knowing Dolly (Dane) i think she will be strong enough and healthy enough to pull it off but Pickle was a sick puppy as it was and has only really now come into his self so i'm very worried if he can fight it off.
Exactly what i thought that she had something stuck in her throat and today she had coughed up flem.

Unfortunately people go all over the place when they have colds and flu - to the shops, to the pictures etc. It's exactly the same as walking a dog with KC. I'm not saying you should take out a dog with a cough, any more than people should take themselves out and about when they're infectious/contagious.

My vet told me not to take my dogs out. Obviously its not fair on anyone else, but it's also not good for the dogs that have it. Getting too hot, too excited and panting all aggrivate the throat.
So it's best to be cruel to be kind and keep them in.

Fair enough but seeing as NHS treatment is free but Vets fees aren't then i would seriously consider taking a dog with KC out and about fully knowing the consequences of what that walk may bring to the neighbourhood (and the cost).
Bear in mind there are only 57 houses in my village so it wouldn't take long to deduce whose home the KC came from. (So rather than have the finger pointing i'd keep mine in as he should have)

But you see my point? If a person has ever gone out in public when they have an infectious illness (such as flu, which made my elderly mother seriously ill a couple of years ago, and she required round-the-clock nursing), whether or not medical treatment is free, then they can't grumble at people walking a dog with KC ...
