Elsewhere on the boards, it is suggested that a Yellow Flatcoated Retriever cannot be shown. If the dog is Kennel Club registered, it can be shown. A two headed dog can be shown. If the Judge is judging to the Kennel Club breed standard, you will not win with such dogs, but you absolutely can show one. Clearly there isn't much point though, but the bottom line is, you can show it.
Only dogs which are not Kennel Club registered cannot be shown. ( at least not at KC licenced events, with the exeption of Companion Shows ).

Hi Dawn
I beg to differ with you :D
Not all KC registered dogs can be exhibited at KC events. I have something particular in mind - can you guess what it is?

I think I'm right in saying that blind dogs may not be shown, but I'm sure that's not what you were thinking!

Don't suppose blind dogs can be shown anything :D :D :D

LOL!! :D :D
Hi JG
I had forgotten about blind dogs so that is at least two "catagories" of KC registered dogs who cannot be shown
Tohme - BEHAVE !!!
so what IS the other one then?

Em
Hi Em
It is quite well known I believe but see if you can find out - without anyone on here telling you :D

Full marks to Tohme :D
Cropped ears was what I had in mind - there are more now I come to think about it but they get slightly more complicated
Albinos can be shown :-(

My black lab bitch can't be shown as she has had surgery for entropion - and I gather this applies to any procedure which "alters the conformation". And how about castrated males??
Cathy.

No, castrated dogs and spayed bitches can be shown.
:)

Alters the confirmation is another one
But there is still at least one more catagory of dogs who are not permitted to be shown (although I may be cheating just a little bit here)
Deaf dogs cannot be shown and neither can any dog who is banned for any reason (the owner or breeder may have been banned).

Take the rough with the smooth

Deaf dogs can be shown in obedience, WT, Agility & Flyball tho'

My parents show their deaf Lurcher at Lurcher shows (ok I know they arent KC shows ;) ) but they dont tell anyone she is deaf just in case she gets disqualified :D :D I dont know if its against the rules of lurcher shows or not.
In season bitches cannot be shown in obedience shows but can in conformation.

That is the other reason I was thinking of - dogs (or owners) who have been banned
Are there any more?

Under 6 months of age Tee hee

Hi Joan,
Have never seen a rule that deaf dogs can't be shown, that's a new one on me - would venture to suggest that several owners wouldn't know their dog is deaf :D never mind the judges .....
Certainly know of one allegedly ;) deaf dog who has been very successful in the show ring, but that's a whole other story!
M.
Deaf and blind dogs are definitely disqualified for conformation although not for agility or obedience, I've just checked it in the red book.
I quite agree that some owners might not know!

OK OK OK, I'll put it another way.The colour of the Yellow Flat Coated Retriever, does not mean it cannot be shown. If it is not registered with the Kennel Club, the Yellow Flat Coated Retriever cannot be shown.
I never said that all KC registered dogs can be exhibited at KC events. I said that dogs not registered with the KC cannot be shown. After 33 years as an exhibitor, I am aware that there are exemptions, but the example I gave was not cause for exclusion.
So I stand by my original statement, if anyone has a Yellow Flat Coated Retriever that is registered with the Kennel Club, it can be shown, assuming it is not blind, banned, had it's ears cropped, or had any other operation that alters it's natural conformation. (big sigh)
Dawn R.
A question re. operations that alter a dogs natural conformation....
I have a pup that has recently undergone a radical operation for Elbow Dysplasia, he is a stunning dog that I was planning to show and had already has stud enquiries (obviously we will not be fulfilling these). Am I still allowed under the rules to show him, would I have to inform the KC, and should I ethically show him, as he obviously isn't the best example of his breed (although everything else about him is spot on). I would only be showing to have some fun, promote the breed - Obi has a fantastic temperament - and to increase Obi's social life :) and I would love to see just how good he is, what judges would think of him, etc. Maybe I should not to Champ Shows as they are obviously the route to Crufts - where I probably shouldn't aim to go?
Would value the opinions of some show people as most of my friends have just said do what you like, how would you feel if you were beaten by a dog with a genetic defect??
Sorry to hijack a post but thought it was all on the same wavelength...
Hayley

You should write to the KC asking for permission to show, enclosing a vet's letter explaining the procedure that was performed (your vet will know the wording) and see what they decide.
:)

I think you would find that the permission would be refused but without asking you will never know
Hi Dawn
It made for an interesting thread though as we searched our brains for exclusions :D
Christine
PS - you missed out deaf :D
