Hi
Funny my dane is doing the same thing but i have checked her ears they are a bit red and have spots which i would say looks like a heat rash, i also have the vet today, let me know what they say to you. i hate it when my pup is sick :-(
Hi Tracey
You can't always see mites with the naked eye - he may have have something in there that is bothering him or even toothache as some of the nerves in the mouth/face are closely entangled with the ear.
There is always an reason for a dog shaking its head/flapping ears - please let us know how you get on at the vets

Try smelling the ears. You can often smell a problem before you can see it. The ear should have, for want of a better discription, a clean smell. If getting bad can have quite a strong smell. A tip is to smell your dogs ears when there is nothing wrong because you then have a "Reference Smell" of what it SHOULD smell like.
Best wishes, John

Hi Tracey
Yep mine was around £24, ear drops too. Her ears did not smell, but when he cleaned them out there was a tiny bit of blood in one so he said i had got there in time before it got any worse, i will clean them myself now (gently) oh she got an antibiotic injection too. not easy getting ear drops in a hyper young dane pup :-D :-D

It is so difficult to find a good vet, we go to a great one now, my old spaniel had a couple of operations last year, one to remove 4-5 mammery lumps, then only a few weeks later a hysterectomy, they did a fantastic job she recovered from both so fast even the vet was surprised, anyway the whole thing operations antibiotics and all only cost £370 i think and that was a good few lots of antibiotics, eye drops and the operations. not too bad i thought!!!
My vet cleaned Leon's ears for free and showed me how. Bless her, eh?

good point my vet did not show me how to but i did watch, but i would still be very carefull , should i use dry or damp cotton wool? ;-)

Try using a product called Thornit, excellent for doggie ears, I have cocker spaniels, I was forever at the vets with them, I've used Thornit for a day and the problem disappears!
Excellent stuff!

If you are cleaning before putting Thornit in I would suggest using cotton wool with sterile saline solution (the kind you can get for contact lenses) this saves making your own and it keeps for ages, or colloidal silver. Neither of these will sting and they are pure.

Definitely get Thornit - I use it on Phoebe who shakes her ears (and slobber) all over the place. I ordered mine on line.
