I have a 6 year old female schipperke that has a problem with itching all of the time.  I have taken her to the vet several times and we have tried special shampoo, antibiotics and fatty acid pills.  The only thing that seems to help is benadryl for a SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.  If anyone has experienced this problem and can give me some advice or a remedy i would greatly appreciate it.  thank you,

Skin problems are very difficult and even vets are sometimes at a loss to know what is causing the problem and therefore what to treat it with. If your vet has been unable to come up with an answer for you I would suggest you try Piriton (original not non-drowsy) if that works then the problem in some sort of allergy, if it does not it is something else.

Make sure you do not use chemicals around the house that may affect the dog such as floor or carpet cleaners or that the washing powder you use on the bed is not at fault. Make sure that the food is not high in grain (rice is usually OK) Do not allow the dog to sleep against a radiator.

It could be that scratching has become a habit and if you think this is the case the vet can give you some tables to use short term that will help with that.  Are you certain she has not got fleas or some other sort of parasite, with some dogs even one bite from a flea will cause a allergic reaction and if you or neighbours keep cats it could be that the fleas are on the cats and it is only the odd one that bites the dog. If you treat the dogs and any other animals you have for parasites do not forget to treat the house as well.

If Benedryl is the only thing that helps, it may indicate you're dealing with an allergy (although constant scratching can then allow infection in ).  It may be worth looking at her diet as well as the other things already mentioned.
