I have a 7 month White German Shephard she has a umbilical hernia, if this is repaired can I breed with her.

The short answer is no. There is a very strong likelyhood that the hernia is hereditory so could likely be passed on to the puppies. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I believe we have a duty to the breeds we love to try to ensure we only breed from the very best.

Regards, John

No, I had a cocker spaniel with the same problem, took her to 4 different vets and they all told me the same thing.  The hernia didn't look that big, but when she was spayed the hernia was repaired at the same time and apparently it was pretty big! The vets all said the same that it was hereditary and she shouldn't be bred from.

Sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear

Trouble is the bulge you see or feel is only the place where the muscle wall has given way and a hole has formed, the weakness may well go all the from navel to pelvis and apart from passing this on to off spring it could become weakened by the bitch being in whelp.

Sorry but if you care about your bitch and the breed you will not breed from her.
