Topic Dog Boards / General / Question about buying a dog.

Hi all
I was just wondering if a breeder would sell my, brother, sisters and i a dog for our mum or would she have to come along aswell?

Since i was very little she has always wanted a King charles. Her and my dad where never in a situation to buy one, then 13 years ago they split up and what with bringing up us kids and having to work longer hours etc she wasn't in a situation to get one.

Now she is able to have one and has been talking more and more about it. I asked her outright yesturday did she want me to get her one. And she said that for the last 3 years she has been wating for us to bring her one home as a surprise. I told her that i couldn't surprise her with something as importnant as a dog and that i had to know for sure if she was really ready for one now.

And oh boy is she ready. My brother and sisters and i have discussed it and have agreed that we will pay.

Thanks Debbie

Well if shes discussed it with you and she knows ...i think it would be best that she came with you saw the pups and spoke to the breeder herself :D
I would hope no good breeder would sell you a pup to give to someone else without them being present...i know i wouldnt as a rescue let you have a rescue dog for someone else...and i would require a homecheck on that person so they would have to know :D

Hi Debbie
You don't say how old you are, but i don't think any responsible breeder would sell a puppy to teenagers or younger "for their Mum". In any case, I think it would be far nicer for your Mum to go along herself & choose "her" puppy. The one she goes for might not be the one you would choose for yourself.
One thing - does she want a King Charles Spaniel or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? They are 2 different breeds, the first much less common than the 2nd. Make sure you do plenty of research before you buy & that all the necessary health checks have been carried out on the parents.
Good Luck!

Hi
I'm 26, sorry should have mentioned that :)

I did think that it would be nice for mum to pick her own pup, that way she gets to see it from really young and then has the excited wait untill the day we can pick it up.

But one of my sisters (also an adult) thought that it would be nicer for us to pick onw out and just take it to her.

I know when we went and bought our pup Buffy it was lovely picking her although hard, but i just knew as soon as i saw her that she was the one for us. And i was so right i couldn't ask for a better pup.

Debbie

PS. It is a king charles spaniel that she wants.

If it's a KCS she wants,(as opposed to a CKCS) they are quite rare.

Hi Smudgley.

I think she may have to wait a bit longer for one. I have managed to find one breeder which i ahve emailed. We will just have to wait and see.
I am not sure if she even realises that there is 2 different breeds.

I will speak to her tomorrow and show her the photos that i ahve found so that we can be sure that it is a cks and not a ckcs that she wants.

And the we can have the enjoyment of trying to find the right breeder and puppy together.

Thanks Debbie

Debbie, Show her some pictures of both & even get a book from the library so you can be sure.
I'm sure she knows what she wants & if it's a KCS then great, but the CKCS are the popular ones. The ones you always see, usually walking with a family with very waggy tails & a happy disposition. Oh yeah & the CKCS is the breed that my husband is driving me mad to have! & I keep saying NO NO NO (well not yet anyway :-D)

I am going to sound really thick here but what is the difference between the 2 breeds?

Hi, I know all the correct and sensible answers we give in this sort of situation, and I know we are all absolutely right in advising that the eventual owner should be fully involved, be vetted by the breeder, etc, etc, and I DO AGREE with all of this advice,  but.......about 10 years ago my ex-bought me a dog as a surprise present, he knew I desperatley wanted one (a buff Am Cocker bitch) but couldnt justify the expense (we already had a houseful of dog anyway!)  so one day a few weeks before christmas he went away for the day - purpose being, supposedly to "arrange" my christmas present (I thought he was getting a picture painted for me, or something!) and came home with a 10 month old Jessica in his arms.  Ok, the breeder did know us a little anyway, but I can say she was absolutely the best present I had ever received, and the element of surprise made her even more special, that he had put so much thought into my ideal gift.  So,  all the sensible advice you were given was absolutely correct, and I will proably be shot down in flames for having posted this, but my surprise dog was wonderful, and worked out beautifully.
bye

I don't think so but do what I did contact a breeder tell them what you are looking for & then take mum for a day out not telling mum where she is going(tell her to visit something near where the breeder lives or just a treat for being so good to you & being your mum) then take her to see the puppies & if the breeder & mum are ok get her the puppy

That way the breeder can meet you & your mum & your mum will have a lovely surprise

Only one thing King Charles Spaniels known as Charlies)are quite a difficult breed to find as there are far few breeders than for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels so you might have a very long wait

I am owned by four cavaliers ;)

My mum loves surprises which is why my sister wanted to buy one as a surprise, we know that she would love and look after a dog completly but a breeder who had never met us wouldnt, which is why i wanted mum to come with us.

Without going into the big boring spill of it all,  mum's life was really hard and she never had anything for herself it was always for us. Since we have grown up and flown  the nest we have done little things for her and this is something that we could really give back.
She would be overjoyed if we just came home with one for her but i think that moonmaidens idea is a good one, although it might be a bit difficult to get her from london to newcastle just for a day out (this is the only place i have found a breeder so far) althought we could possible plan a girls weekend!

Thanks Debbie

ok, i have just looked at the kennel club page and i am now thinking that it could be the ckcs that she wants.
But i also might be thinking that because i know that the colour she wants is the tan & white and the picture of the cks is the black & tan.

I will ask her tomorrow tho.

KCS and CKCS come in exactly the same variety of colours ... ;)
- By Moonmaiden Date 26.04.04 07:20 UTC
They do JG but the Charlies can have flecking in the white & markings can be more random there are no mismarks in Charlies

Charlies can be docked or nor Cavaliers are now rarely docked

Charlies have low set ears & a domed head between the ears, very short muzzle

Cavaliers have high set ears & a flat skull between the ears & a longer muzzle

Charlies tend to be smaller that the average cavalier

They both should have an outgoing character & should both be good with children

Thanks all for your replys.
I am really hoping that it is the ckcs that my mum wants as it will much easier for me to get one. She does know that there is 2 different breeds but is unsure of the one she wants, she said that she won't know untill she see's a picture or one in the flesh. So will have to wait untill the weekend when she is here and show her the different breeds on the net.

I'll keep you all updated.

Thanks again Debbie

I would let her go and choose if she wants the dog and knows you are getting it for her anyway. I don't think a breeder would let you do otherwise although my mum did years ago for my nan but i think she got him from a friend.
The cavaliers are lovelly, she should want one of those lol.

I'm sure the wait will drive her crazy, i only had a few days to wait for our sheltie and that drove me nuts... i filled it up with shopping for him and puppy proofing the house
