Topic Dog Boards / General / Kicking out back leg

My ESS is now 18 months and he always seems to kick out with his left leg when he runs, sometimes when he sits it is also out a bit.
He is very lively and is always running full flight but I am wondering if there may be a problem.
Should I be worried, he is not at all bothered.
Sandie.

My 2 year old elkie used to do this but not when he was running. He would be stood and then just flick his leg out as if kicking at something.Hes stopped now

If it is the sort of thing a horse does when a fly lands on it then it is normal and common but I don't know why. It may be an automatic response to a tickle that some dogs have and others don't. Just a guess.

I don't want to alarm you because it's probably not it. What is an ESS? Is that English Springer Spaniel? These initials always make me have to think. Anyhow, my Chihuahua mix did this because his patella was slipping out of the socket, subsequently needing surgery. This is common with little dogs, but I don't think so with bigger ones. It was as if he was trying to get it back in place.
