Ive read posts about knong fillings that say cheese spread, peanut butter etc but I want to know what i should fill it with for a 15week old puppy. Leo has decided that its fun to make the biggest mess ever in the kitchen when we are out even for 10 mins so i want to leave him his kong but need to know that its filled with something suitable

hi my staffy pup candy is 4.5 months old and i fill her kong with tiny biscuits, and dried puppy food etc.she is obsessed by pasta at the mo so i put that in as well.she still tries to destroy everything though but she's such a babe I hate disciplining her.what breeds your pup?
He's a sheltie, the first few times he was left he was an angel but now hes into shredding paper, tipping water all over the floor and pulling his basket around - Ever since we've been taking him walks hes developed lots more energy lol
Leon's current fave is peanut butter in the end, biscuits and cubes of liver inside with salt free veggie stock poured in and frozen - like a doggie ice lolly! He is 16 weeks at moment.

If you feed a soft food then his own normal diet is most suitable - make sure that the puppy can't detroy the Kong in your abscence though!

I would put his meal, or part of it, in there. I often give my dogs their food stuffed into a kong or one of those hollow stuffed bones, (after I've removed the c**p that comes with them) especially when the weather is bad and we haven't been for as long a walk as we would usually.

Ok so I have been experiementing with things - He likes banana, peanut butter, cheese, cheese spread and of course all the doggie foods,
What of these would be ok to give him, obviously we would only give small amounts as the main content would be his dog food... with the peanut butter that has salt in so isnt that bad for them? or can you get unsalted?
Also he is a sheltie puppy so only small in comparison to some breeds and he has a large puppy kong, is that big enough to stuff, I know the kong site says that for a small breed get a medium kong, but hes not a large puppy and its a large puppy kong?
I want to try it tomorrow, we are going to OH's parents for lunch and they are paranoid that hes always up to something even when hes not, so i thought if he had that 2 play with they wont be as bothered - will put newspaper down tho so he cant make too much mess with it.

We got ours from Pets @ Home, but most pet shops in our area all stock them,in a variety of sizes, depending on breed of dog :D
We also bought a large hard plastic ball with holes in it to fill with treats, but with Spice chasing it around the living room knocking into the chair legs, settee etc. crashing about to get the treats to fall out,we have now re-designated that to an outside toy! and keep her kong for indoor entertainment :D

Hi Jessthepest, You beat me to it :D great minds think alike :)
i got mine from www.petplanet.co.uk because our pets at home only had the adult kong and i wanted a puppy one
Sainsburys do a low salt version of peanut butter. Plus, Bisto have just started doing reduced salt gravy...my supermarket trips are so much fun, can't you tell?!

Hi I also have a sheltie, who does exactly the same as yours.
At 15 wks I was filling his kong with dry dog food, and a little cream cheese to seal the top and make it appealing. mine is now 6 months old, so I put more cheese, and puppy markies, so that it takes him longer to empty the Kong.
The problem with Shelties is that they get bored quickly, and thats why they get destructive. I would advise going out and buying him some new toys, and then rotate his toys- don't let him have all of them at the same time, and hide some of them away for a week or so- then when you give him them again, he gets excited by them again.
When you go out, try to leave a radio or television on, and obviously make sure there is nothing within his reach. Mine was shredding his training mat, so I was forced to remove that when i went out during the day, as i was concerned the plastic backing may stick in his throat.
As for the spilling of water and dragging the bedding around- he's stil doing that. But we are working on it!!!
In fact, ignore what I said - have just checked for you and its actually salt free - Meridian Foods Crunchy Peanut Butter, No Salt. I get it online from Sainsbury's xx

when the pupies are betwen 12 to 16 weeek lost their teeth the best result is to fill the kong and freeze it,then it cool on the gums.
well i tried putting in his dinner in a couple of treats and covered the ends with cheese spread.......it took him about 5 mins to empty it lol so now i know he knows what to do with it ill try the frozen one.....hes my daft greedy boy lol
