Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / identical twins??
- By BoxerLuv [gb] Date 23.04.04 14:53 UTC
hi all
Me and my wife were on the subject of placenta's and were wondering if it is possible for a bitch to produce twins, in the sense that 2 pups share 1 placenta.
I know that all the pups would be classed as twins in a way(if you know what i mean) but is it possible for her to produce identical twins?
can you help?
thx

Yes it is possible for two puppies to share a placenta...I had one in my litter, had 6 puppies but only got 5 placenta's. Called my vet about it cause I was all worried and she told me that sometimes they do share one. It never came with the first puppy but did with the second one.

Just like in humans they could be identical or not. :)

If they share a placenta they will be identical. If not, then they are fraternal. Just like humans.

Would the pups have identical markings etc?

Not necessarily. The photos that were in the paper a year or so ago about cloned cats showed totally different-looking cats markings-wise. But they were genetically the same.
