Im getting a irish setter for my 18th bday! :)
But i dont know which sex to choose, Am i right in thinking the boys are more loving and loyal?
Also training wise, i know these dogs are a nightmare to train, but which sex is slighty easier??
Thanks Guys

Hi Guest
Why don't you register and join the forum, it's a great place for helpful hints and really good advice.
I would suggest talking to as many people as you can with this breed, maybe visit some shows nearby or arrange a visit to a breeder who lives in your area and see the difference in sizes between males and females and hear their opinions.
I have two Irish Setter girls at the moment one is 2 and a half and the other is just 14 weeks.I was hoping to keep a boy from my girl's first litter, but she produced only one girl and I couldn't bear to part with her, I also grew up with an Irish boy. The decision you make should be your own personal choice. I have no preference, I just love Irish Setters be they boys or girls. My oldest girl was trained with Border Collies for the first 7 months of her life and I have never had a problem with her obedience (not even recall) I was probably just lucky tho. My Mums boy was slightly less well behaved but that could just be lack of training. I will however say that I have two friends who show Irish boys and they really have their hands full. As for loyalty, well my Mum's boy was devoted to her and my girl is like that with me. When I first decided to get my own Irish I chose a girl as I loved my Mum's boy so much that I didn't feel I could have a boy and not compare him to my Mums boy.
Girls will have seasons so be prepared for some mess unless you get her spayed, which is a good idea if you are not planning on showing her.
As I said before it all comes down to personal preference and as long as you train your Irish with patience and understanding you should get the best from either a male or female.
Have you got a puppy booked? I know at the moment they are not particularly easy to come across, as most breeders have bookings well in advance, however you might be lucky as I know there are some litters in England at the moment.

Sorry for rambling on and not being of any help at all
Good luck in making your decision and let us know how you get on.
