Hi my girl had 2 still born pups 2nd April. since then i have noticed a discharge started off opaque colour now its gone a darker colour, i have taken her to the vets she is on antibiotics but its still not cleared up.. I am getting very worried about her getting pyometria, she is well and feeding not drinking excessivly. Can anyone help with advice as to what it is???? i keep reading all the boards but i still cant decide if she could have it. Wondering wether to change my vet as i rang them last week about it but said if she is well in herself leave her till monday...So i did take her monday but still not happy...

Hiya Stephanie.
Have you voiced your concerns to your vet about it being pyometra? If so, what does he/she say?
If not, i would certainly go back again, because as you know pyometra can be fatal.
I would have exactly the same concerns as you.
Insist on your vets looking into it further.

Don't think this is Pyometria, and if it is as it is open (she is discharging) and on antibiotics then she should be ok. More important if you do not trust your vet you should change, one must have faith in the vet or you spend your life worrying

Steph,
Don't want to worry you but I had a bitch with the same thing. I took her to the vets simply because of an unusual discharge - she was fine in herself. He gave her an antibiotic injection but she went in the next day to be spayed.
It turned out it WAS toxic pyometria and the antibiotics wouldn't have cleared it. If you trust your vet then he's got more knowledge than me. If in doubt get a second opinion. Good luck :)

That is a worry Joe, as you say if in doubt about your vet see another one.

She was absolutely fine in herself but I'd always known it was a possibility as she wasn't spayed. Pleased I acted quickly. He said it was solid with toxins inside. She was a tough old boot though and didn't show any signs other than the discharge. Still, on the bright side, not all discharges will be pyo.
Hello, i have rang the vets again and he is going to do a swab in the morning. Not sure why he couldn't do that when i took her on monday??? or even when i rang about it last friday??? i am getting fed up with them now, it seams to be one thing after another and all they say is (if she is happy in herself then don't worry) So how long will i have to wait before i get the results back??? if any one knows??? Thanks Steph PS my vet did mention about piometria on monday and said if she did get it she would have to be spayed...so surely he should have swabbed her then to see what infection it was???

Steph I had a collie who had a pyo which ended up fatal She went down very quickly. I feel if your dog had pyometra things would have changed since Monday just in my opinion. If you are worried about it maybe it would be better to get your dog speyed then you will have peace of mind. hope all goes well

thanks that has made me feel much happier, but i prefer not so spay her if she is going to be ok, i am wanting to breed her as i want to keep 2 of her pups from the next litter, because i am wanting to start showing. so i will see what the vet says tomorrow...

Any news Steph?
tara had a swab taken it looked clean so waiting for the results, the vet also felt her abdomen couldnt feel anything wrong there so fingers crossed she might just need a different course of antibiotics..still looks ands feels well eating like a horse and not drinking excessivly...Thankyou Steph
It is natural for bitches to have a discharge for a few weeks after whelping but always best to get it checked out if you are worried. My girl whelped on 8th March and has just about finished discharging - I think

Glad to hear your news Steph, its such a worry when the babies aren't well But things look good for your baby
