Hi, I don't post a lot on here but am always lurking. As some of you may know we have a (just turned on Good Friday) year old Siberian Husky called Dre. Normally he wolfs his food down like there is no tomorrow but yesterday he didn't touch his breakfast and my partner said he ate his tea very slowly and wasn't really interested in it. We threw that away and gave him some supper which he didn't touch either. Its the same today, he hasn't touched his breakfast. He seems to be drinking but not an awful lot. In any other way he seems his normal self, playing with my OH's family dog and tearing around as usual. His nose was a little warm and dry yesterday but is cold and wet today and his rear end activities are normal and he isn't being sick. We are feeding him Bakers Complete which we are told is fine and have been feeding him since 12 weeks old when we picked him up. Any idea why he doesn't seem interested in his food, do you think we should take him to the vets for a check up or see how it goes?

Any help would be appreciated. Sorry its a bit long.

Maybe it's one of those "i've gone off this food" things.  Have you tried him with something else?

I have also heard and i KNOW THIS IS GROSS... that horse manure can get back an appretite but dont go feeding him that...it's just a bit of useless information!

Try him with something else like chicken and rice or something to get something inside him.

I do worry when my dog doesn't eat because he usually gulps his food down but I know for a fact that one reason was because he was bored with his food.

You would be bored if someone fed you the same meal day in day out since you were little.  Wouldn't you?

If he is not showing any other signs of illness chances are it's jus a boredom thing with food.  You know your own dog obviously so if you are happy with him otherwise just try a food change.

He also has his dinner at my OH's parents house and they feed him Hills so dont think it could be a boredham thing unless he is bored with both these foods?

has he eaten there recently?

I would still just try him on something elese like chicken and rice.

My dog once had gastric problems and he would eat a bit of food then parctically run away from it because it must have been hurting him to eat or making him feel ill.

If your dog shows no signs of any illness,  I wouldn't worry too much.

You can use B Sorb(available from a few places on the net)to keep him going whilst he is not eating & it will also help stimulate his appetite.

Thanks for the advice, he had a little bit of dinner round there yesterday and today but is still not over keen. I will try him on the chicken and rice tonight see how we get on.

If  he is not interested in something yummy like chicken then if he were mine I would take him to the vet for a check up, just to make sure.

Well we tried him on his normal food first and he had a few mouthfuls then turned his nose up at it so we made him some chicken and rice which he ate but not with over enthusiasm (sp) so we are making an appointment with the vet today just to be on the safe side. OH's family dog has a cold so (im not sure if dogs colds can be passed on to other dogs like us) he may have caught this?

I don't think dogs get colds (has it been diagnosed as such by a vet?), so it could well be that your dog has contracted whatever virus your OH's family dog has. A vet trip would be a good idea.

Could be a virus that is getting him down.  To put your mind at rest a trip to the vets is best.

Let us know how it goes hopefully he will be back to scoffing his food soon. :-)

I wouldn't worry too much if everything else seems normal.  Copper sometimes goes off his (dog) food for days but he doesn't have a problem scoffing a little bit of what I'm having.  My acid test is also chicken.  If he won't eat chicken then its straight to the vets.  I'm sure yours is just having one of those "off" times and will get back to normal soon.

Thanks all, we thought we would be safe rather than sorry so have an appointment at the vets at 4.00p.m. today. Fingers crossed our little boy is ok.
