Thank you Christine & Leigh for your kind wishes :-)

It's funny this subject should still be discussed at the time when my other dog is due his first booster. We will be getting him titre tested before we decide anything.

When we got our second Weim (the one who is due his first booster as mentioned above) our breeder who has done so much research and has so much knowledge on the breed it's unbelievable, talked to us about some weimaraners who have suffered severe reactions to a combined MLV. An article appeared in The Vet Record which we were given a copy and I gave a copy to our vet. We were advised to separate Parvo & Distemper by a 2 week gap because apparently it is this combination within the same vac that can cause very high temp and painful swollen joints. We recently met a weim puppy who had the combined vaccine and had indeed experienced similar if not identical symptoms when having a reaction :-(

Anyway rather than taking the risk and of course having already been down a scary road with our bitch we decided the advice was good and asked our vet to obtain split vaccines. It took longer for my boy to be vaccinated as the usual course of 2 vaccines was split over a number of weeks, we followed this regime:

Single Parvo given at 6 wks old, Distemper & Hepatitis given at 8 wks, Single Parvo given at 10 wks, Distemper & Hepatitis given at 12 wks, Lepto given at 14wks then another Lepto given at 16 wks. Bit of a long haul but if it reduced the chances of a reaction and my pup was still vaccinated then all the better. It will be interesting to see what his titre test result is.

The titre test result for my bitch was CDV Elisa score of 11 (Distemper) a postive value suggesting adequate protection and no need to vac. CPV titre was 1:4096 (parvo) again suggesting a protective titre, I was also told this was a very high score. Lepto no antibodies detected at 1/100 and Canine Adenovirus no significant antibody detected so no protection for Lepto and Hepatitis.

Christine I found that website very interesting and may decide to purchase that book. With regards to feeding BARF, hmmmm don't know about that one yet but I always keep an open mind and would never say a firm NO! I think all in all I would still opt to have puppy vacs and try to split them as above, there on titre test most definately before deciding on boosters etc. I will always give homeopathic combined vac including KC to my bitch and homeopathic KC to my dog as there's no harm.

Ooops sorry, didn't realise my last post was so long. Hope it doesn't bore the pants off anyone ;-)

Message for Jo Flatcoat - can you post here or email me privately again with the cost of your titre test. If I remember correctly both your dog's and mine were sent to Glasgow except I payed a lot more than you did and I want to be able to query it this time round when I take my boy.

Thanks.

Hi there

The lab charges for my test was £24.00, with the vet's bit on top to take the blood and the postage would have been , I suppose, another £10.00 or so (I haven't got their old invoice, but the lab charges are put on the result sheet.

Hope this helps

Thanks Jo. I will definately be asking my vet about the cost because I'm fairly certain we paid approx £120 for ours. Just a slight difference from yours AND they went to the same place

Cheers!

Hi Jo, thats the same as I paid as well.

Hi Claire, you obviously know loads about it & the way you are going is great. The reason Im so angry about what happened to mine is I didnt know,Id heard a few vague rumours & even asked my vet before the pups were vac, if hed had any reactions to any dogs hed vac & he said no.I still think that the risks of vac should be widely published tho.
Hope all goes well for your nan & dogs
Christine.

When we got our bitch all this stuff about splitting vaccines wasn't really known which is why I wonder if her puppy vaccines affected her immune system. I'll never know for certain and I now just concentrate on keeping her healthy and watching her closely.

I think everyone vaccinating their dog should certainly be made aware of the risks. I'm not surprised your vet said he'd had no dog suffer a reaction because I reckon a lot of the time we don't know for certain that the vaccine was to blame. All I know is that some dogs have reactions and I know of some in my breed and that was enough to make me worry. My vet thought we were nuts but he went along with our wishes to split the vaccines because he know's we're not daft and most of the time humours us and our requests anyway.....lol

Thanks for that, Chris - appreciated

This thread has got me very worried, as I have 3 pups who are going for their first vacs next week! I tried to get just the parvo vaccine for them at 7 weeks, but my vet can only buy them in 10's and I would have had to buy all of them. So I'm waiting until they are 10 weeks to start, when hopefully they can cope better with the combined vaccine.
Also, I have another worry with my Whippet, who will be 5 this month. He had his puppy vaccine, then a booster a year later, but due to the fact that I was worried about over-vaccinating, he has had nothing since. To make me even more worried, TWO of his litter mates have developed auto-immune disorders, his brother has haemolytic anaemia, and his sister has a type which affects her joints (lupus- type?), which she developed soon after her first booster.
I have fed him a BARF diet with flax seed oil and supplements for the last 3 years, but I do worry about his protection against lepto, parvo etc. Should I go ahead and have a booster, or get him titre tested, and if so, what does this involve, can my own vet do it, etc, etc?
Any help much appreciated as I want to do the right thing....

Well I'm no expert and there are loads of thoughts and ideas on the do's and don'ts of vaccination but my thoughts would be that if you are worried about your dog's immunity then a titre test would at least give you an indication of what the immune levels are like against certain diseases.

Your vet will take a blood sample, you must ask for it to be tested for all the viruses/diseases that you normally vaccinate against i.e. Parvo, Distemper, Hepatitis and Lepto., he will then send it off to the lab and approx. 14 days later you receive a report, a copy of which your vet will keep. Not everyone likes to have titre tests done because they feel it's an unnecessary visit to the vet or they would rather not know what the immunity levels are. One thing to remember, just because some of his litter mates have immune problems doesn't necessarily mean your dog will. My bitch has immune problems but her litter mates are all fine. My vet recommends puppy vaccinations, the first annual booster then no more boosters for 2 or 3 years and only boost every 2 or 3 years.

With regards to the split vaccines, it is true they come in batches of 10, however my vet managed to use them up because all he did was mix the split vaccines together when vaccinating other pups but he kept them separated for my pup. It really depends on how helpful your vet is because mine first thought I was mad but respected my wishes, however I do know of other people who had to change vets in order to get the vaccines separated. I also might add that the only reason we did this was because there had been vaccine reaction cases in our breed and this regime was said to reduce the risks but not eliminate them. We were informed by our breeder that weims react only to the puppy vacs and not the boosters.

I would say if your dog is fit and healthy then try not to worry. We only found out our bitch had immune problems because she developed meningitis TWICE :-( Also remember that all those dogs who have had reactions to vaccines there is also a large number that haven't.

Good Luck with whatever you decide but if you have a good vet then talk to him. Remember what is right for one person/breed is not necessarily right for you. :-)

Very well explained Claire,& if you dont mind I`d just like to say that vets should comply with our wishes as we do pay them rather a lot,& the vet I have now is great.
Just to remind everyone of Suspected Adverse Reaction Survaillance Scheme, you dont have to prove it, it only needs to be "suspected" & anyone can report it to the VMD.They then look into it & decide what to do.They publish a yearly report wiyh the percentages but if few people put a report in then these percentages cannot be correct.
I didn`t want to worry anyone only make them aware & maybe I should have got Claire to explain what I wanted to say, as shes done a brill job!

Thanks Christine, that's a very nice thing to say :-)

I think you probably have more knowledge than I do though, you've had a number of hurrendous experiences with vaccines, thankfully I've only had one and I hope it stays that way.

BTW are you back living in the UK now or still in Spain ?
- By Christine Date 05.04.02 15:31 UTC
Hi Clare, just speaking the truth. The only experts I suppose are the manufactures who keep the info to themselves & won`t put the money into more research. How is your gran & doggy?
I live here permanantly, into my 22yr now but go back once or twice ayear to visit.
Christine.
