Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How would you respond?

Hello Everyone

I had a telephone call from a lady looking to buy a proven stud dog, she has two bitches that she wants to start breeding and sell the pups for pets.  She doesn't want to use an outside stud dog due to the possible risk of infection.  The bitches are KC registered but were sold by there breeders as pets.  I asked her to call back later as I was just going out.
How would you respond?

Regards
Joan

I would ask her why her bitches' breeders sold them as pets. I would also point out that a proven stud dog is as likely to carry an infection as an outside dog! I would also ask her why she is aiming low with her breeding plans - why she only wants to produce second-class puppies.

The sad thing is that she is almost certain to get one from "somewhere" whatever you tell her. Chances are it wont be a very good one! If it was me I would just say that i didnt have one available and didnt know of any for sale (But then I'm not into wasting my breath!)

Hopefully the bitches have a sound temperament & decent health and any dog she finds is the same. (Ever the optimist!)

I would ask who their breeder was and get a hold of them, and why were they only sold as pets......I would also tell them either way both stud dog and bitch need to be tested for sexualy transmitted diseases....Can't you get into alot of trouble breeding with someone who is not registering their puppies and you being regsitered (just wondering)? Sounds to me like she doesn't want to be bothered with doing the tests needed for the breed, unless she has and if so I would ask to see them...

Hi
Thanks for your replies, I have spoken to the lady again, she is breeding Chihuahua's at the moment, but she thinks theres enough of them around now. Told her ditto for Papillons.
I did say for her to contact the breeders of the bitches and ask for there help.
Would hate to say that I was washing my hands of it, just feel there was not alot else I could say.

Hi Dollface, don't think I've ever heard of a stud dog owner getting into bother with KC over letting it mate an unregistered bitch (how would they know).  lol

Joan
