I have two bitches that live happily together in the family home. One of them is due to whelp in a few weeks time. I have a whelping room for her, but should I keep my other bitch completely away from her and the pups when they are born. If so for how long? or should they get along? (they get on great normally)
Any advice would be most appreciated
Thanks!

As soon as she feels labour starting she will become very protective and not let the other bitch near her. She doesn't need upset of this kind at that time, so make sure the other bitch is well out of the way if you want things to go smoothly. After the pups are born she will be very vigilant and growl if she sees the other bitch anywhere near "her room". Her protective instinct as far as the pups are concerned will far outweigh any previous friendship with another bitch.
This will go on for several weeks - declining in severity as the pups grow. Gradually as the litter gets older you will find that she will relax more and more when the other bitch is present.
They will let you know. Keep a close eye on your pregnant bitch and be ready to keep the otherone away from her - it may well be worth starting now so that it is not quite such a shock when the time comes if they are always together.
I have had dogs and bitches who have been wary of coming into the house when "eyed" by a bitch with pups who is behind gates etc. My "current mum" is not too bothered though and lets her grandmother pass to and fro though the pups to get in and out.
