I lost a 19 week old pug puppy a couple of years ago who was suffering from HV. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this because there is not much information available on the subject. I am also angry because I know that the breeder I had him from is still breeding from both parents although I had told her what had happened.

Hi

I am sorry to hear that you lost your pup though this problem.  I had not heard of it before but looked it up and it seems as though it is very common in the screw tail breeds - in fact part of why they have a screw tail, so I would have thought, from my brief reading, it would be difficult to eridicate from a breed without eridicating the breed as well?

Hi, there is some research being done on this problem, a collection of X-rays have been submitted and a researcher at one of the universities is going to study the findings.  The initial data has been looked at (I have forgotten the name of the gentleman, he lives on the South coast).  One of the problems is that a lot of people are unwilling to subject a Pug to a general anasthetic for the X-ray, as they can suffer from adverse effects easily. so only have the x-rays done when a GA is necessary for another reason.  At the moment, there is no KC or BVA scheme to record the results even when such x-rays have been done.  So sorry to hear about you pug pup, it must have been awful.
bye
Gwen

Gwen, is it specific to the pug? Or can other breeds be affected?

Bostons, Bulldogs, Pugs - mostly those breeds with a screw tail from what I could see
