is it usual for a breeder to hold a pup for twelve weeks, even if he has weaned by ten. does it depend on breed. thankyou for any advice

Yes it does along with the experience of the purchaser.

A lot of the toy breeders will not allow their pups to go to new homes until they are at least 12 weeks, sometimes later.  Many want them to have had their second vaccination as well.

Take heart. This is one, (just one) indication that you're dealing with a reputable breeder who cares about her dogs. I've seen many give them away way to early. If you live near by, you could go visit with your pup probably.
