Topic Dog Boards / Showing / how to start

I have a 15 week old labrador from show winning parents (annsfarm). I have had a few comments on how beautiful his head is and what a great dog he is going to be. I was just wondering how to start showing him, what age to start, what types of show to enter and if there are any ringcraft schools in north yorkshire.

Thanks Lianne

Hi Lianne
join a local ringcraft club. They will show you HOW ti show your dog and teach your dog how to show.
You cannot enter a show until your dog is 6 months old so plenty of time yet...buy the national dog newspapers(our dogs and dogs world) and they will give you info on shows ...Champ shows hve to be entered well in advance(about 8 weeks I think) and open shows a few weeks before the show.Schedules for Leeds Champ show have just come out(end of July) so your boy would be eligible.

Go to ringcraft and start out at open shows!

Companion shows are also starting and these are fun shows where when your dog is 5 months take him, but tell everyone he is 6 months.  People will normally look at you, they know when a puppy is under 6 months, but nearly everyone does it for training purposes!

The best person to tell you if your dog IS good enough to show is the breeder.  She will also know of any club/single breed shows coming up.

I advise you start going round some local open shows NOW without the dog so you can get a feel for them and see how its done!
