If you are wishing to introduce a young puppy to the sight and sound of traffic you should do it very gradually. Pick a fairly quiet road and sit or stand well away from the kerb with your pup. Just stay there for a while and watch the traffic go by. If your pup seems nervous do not comfort him or it will make him think that he is right to be fearful. Just talk to him in a normal, happy voice.

If your dog is quite confident about traffic and you just wish to teach him manners then, yes, every time you come to cross a road have him sit beside you on the kerb. You will need to reward and praise him when he does this until he has thoroughly learned what is required. He needs to realise that coming to a kerb means 'sit' and remain sitting until you give him the signal to cross with you, so do this even when you come to a road that is clear of traffic. Never try to dash across through a gap in traffic with a dog.
