Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / ckcs change in appearance if spayed
- By Guest [gb] Date 16.04.04 21:53 UTC
I have been advised by a breeder that if I have my ckcs spayed she will become fat, greedy and will have a curly coat.  Does a curly coat really matter? Won't she get a curly coat with old age anyway? Will she only get fat if I over her feed her?  She is fussy at the minute so couldn't over feed her if I tried.  Won't have her spayed until she is about 18 months depending on her seasons.

Hiya guest.
After having a bitch spayed you could well find that it will put weight on her, but this can be easily controlled by diet, so i really wouldn't worry about that.
Also neutering and spaying can alter the coat texture, but unless you are planning to show, then it doesn't matter.
I'm sure others will disagree with me on this, though.
The coat might be a little harder to care for, but with regular grooming, it won't make any difference.

Not all cavaliers get a curly coat as they get older my two older boys have exactly the same coats they had when younger

Bitches do tend to keep their coats more if spayed, but nothing you can't cope with unless she already has a very heavy coat
.
They do tend to go curly if you have them clippered tho'(my friends a groomer & has had to sort out lots of clippered Cavaliers, she scissors them if the owners insist they are trimmed, but she doesn't like doing it)

Depends very much on how much coat your girl has already. I don't "do" female dogs(the bitch GSD I have is rescued & is spayed-part of the rescue rules).

You will have to keep an eye on her weight if she's a piggy(my cavaliers aren't for some reason), but if want to have her spayed go ahead as long as you & your vet are happy & her heart is ok

Changes in the coat do not matter even if you are wanting to show her, but what does matter is that you are able to still groom it properly and get right down to the skin because if you can't she may well get skin problems. You can of course always clip her coat. There is no need for the bitch to get fat as you control the food that she has and if you can stop her scrounging then the weigh should remain the same, there may however be a thickening up of the appearance as happens to us at the menopause. IMO bitches suffer a good deal less than dogs from neutering and the only other side effects that I have seen are an increase in aggression and incontinence. Think the degree of effect may be linked to the age when done and think the later the better.
