Hi,
Just curious - can spayed bitches be shown?

Spayed bitches can be shown.
They can also be shown legitimately with permission from the KC where the spaying was done for a medical reason such as pyometra and not just as a contraceptive device.
It is impossible to tell whether a bitch has been spayed in the show ring unlike a male!! so I am sure there are many spayed bitches being shown without the knowledge of the judges or KC.

Sorry but the KC will give permision to show a spayed bitch even if it is just to prevent breeding. Just write and say the bitch has been spayed and may I have permission to show, and it will be granted. Jackie H

You can tell if a bitch has been spayed in my breed (Golden Retrievers) as it ruins their coat - it becomes much thicker and coarser - something to do with the oestrogen or lack of it. I've got to have my younger girl spayed as she's been having severe phantom pregnancies and the vet thinks she might have a cyst in her womb. I'm not too unhappy about it - I'd rather have her healthy and happy than a miserable show dog (the phantoms affect her behaviour).
