Hi,
I was wondering if somebody could help please?? I have a 3mth old Lab bitch, every time I put water down to her she has a drink then she puts her paws in and starts scratching/digging. Is this anything to worry about? am I missing something ? I have never seen this before or heard of it. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Nothing to worry about just a typical Lab puppy exploring the world and no doubt facinated by the water. :)

Our little lab, Freya, who is just 5 months old as well, has a drink, then gets hold of her bowl and THROWS it!!! At Crufts I got her one of the anti'tip/spill bowls - but she still manages to drench everyone in sight!!
Our bigger lab, Gypsy, has to dunk her tennis balls in the water bowl before playing with them.

Archie dropped a pea in his water bowl - spent ages walking round and round the bowl, dipping his paws in and squeaking !. So cute - but so wet afterwards !!!.

She may be seeing her reflection - especially if it's a stainless bowl, you could try changing the bowl.....

I have a leonberger, that does that daly, but he always saves a little in his mouth, just to put on my lap!
My Lab does the same thing, i brought a heavy bowl to stop her tipping it up but still swishes the water around lol..

I have a really large water bowl as I have 5 labs, puppy age 12 weeks likes to sit in it while sploshing, all my other labs did this as puppies. Nothing to worry about if you can handle the mess. lol.

My Sibes have an auto-water thingy, so they can't tip it over. But when Kieron was a puppy, instead of swimming in it or trying to tip it over, she would plunge her head into the water and blow bubbles. Thats all she would do. Blow bubbles. I guess she figured out how to hold her breath and everything like that, so she had a time making us laugh when hundreds of little bubbles would come up out of her nose. She also loves to search for ice cubes when it is a hot day and I give them ice water to help keep them cool. Fun fun fun.

What is this auto water thingy. I have a german shepherd pup who also lkes to tip up her bowl. She is amused by the drips that come off her chin into the bowl and has to try and touch the splash with her paw. She will then drag the bowl around the kitchen and tip it over. It is the heaviest pot one that I could find. All this water is doing my wood floors not much good and would be grateful for a discription of this gadget.

Thanks for the web site and description but looks very flimsy to me my pup would have it turned over in no time.

LOL Lucy,
That is what Hubby says.. :-)))
You know the little sod chewed one of the seat belts in my car at the weekend then had the cheek to put a face on that said " it wasn't me mum" , luckily it was the lap belt in the middle. How she accessed it from the boot I will never know of course. She is at the age where you cannot take your eyes of her. ( or at least Hubby can't :-)) )
I have always got bruises on my tummy from her jumping up at me. She doesn't dare do that to her dad.
Oh the joy. She has such a forgiving face so she gets off with a lot.
We had them away in the caravan down south from Thursday till yesterday it was great. They slept in the awning , they all had a ball though.

Has anyone tried a BIG bucket? when filled with water its tooo heavy to move (just keep it topped up!) We have one which is only filled up daily and hold plenty of water for the 4 dogs and one cat :)
A bucket - what a great idea.
When Luna, a choc lab, was little, she did the same. I had to put her waterbowl out into the bathroom, because she was destroying my kitchen floor.

The other great thing about buckets is you can pick them up cheep, infact ours was a big tub of oats we got given by a family member who got it from his work!!!
The only thing is it has been knocked over once with lots of dogs jumping around and when it has lots of water i it the floor gets drenched!!!! but like I have said its only once and its better then a bowl being knocke everyday!

We have a sibe who digs in his water bowl,( it's a family trait), so we have a calf drinker in our dog run which is plumbed in and tops itself up as soon as he empties it. You can pick them up for about £15 at an agricultural merchants.

do you have a web site for the supplier of the calf drinker
Yeah I can see it could be a problem if you have more than one dog. I still "only" have Luna, so she would probablely not be able to knock it over :-)
But I'll hang on to this idea.

We fill a bucket with sand/Mud, then put the water bowl in that.

i have a schnauzer puppy and she does the same i think its the fascination with the reflection,we have a stainless bowl and she can see herself in the bottom and i think its all part of learing and discovering fun but messy.(worse than kids)

We used to have a old fashioned butlers sink in the garden when we got Megan the newfie, but she spent more time sitting in it than drinking out of it, her party trick was to sit in and dunk her head under the water, then run in the kitchen and shake, she is 5 now but still does her water tricks now we close the bottom half of the stable back door when she goes out.
