I was inside harrods store in london and i was upset because last time i went i saw dachshund puppies in a pet shop for sale. This time i went up to harrods and saw pappillon puppies in the pet shop for sale, i was devastated.I asked the lady where they came from and she said "a breeder" and then i said "it's not likely a reputable breeder would just sell their puppies to a pet store" she didn't answer me!and then i asked how old were the puppies were she said thirteen weeks, and then she said "you cant just come here and buy the puppies, you need to sign papers" and i said i wasn't even interested in buying those puppies.I was more concerned where the puppies came from, the first thing when i saw them was they were from puppie farmers, i am so upset.Do you think they were from puppy farmers? i love to see animals which come from good breeders, not puppy farmers or pet shops!
Thats awful you wouldnt think a shop like Harrods would do such a thing,
i would imagine they are from a puppy farm because what breeder would let there puppies go to a pet shop, i always thought that it was made illegal to sell puppies in a pet shop but since registering with C/D ive found out there are pet shops that still sell pups :(

I remember watching a programme about Harrods selling puppies, a good while ago.
Although it's something i don't agree with. They had much better facilities than any ordinary pet shop. They had a vet on call all the time and a vet nurse that worked there permanently.
I'm pretty sure the puppies weren't from puppy farms either (although like you said, what reputable breeder would sell to a pet shop, harrods or not).
They had time out when they needed it and were very well looked after.
Like i said i disagree with pet shops selling puppies, but if i had to choose, between Harrods and the local one round the corner, i know which would treat their puppies better.

I dare say there will be somebody whos
very proud of the fact that their pups are sold at harrods :(

When I went to harrods they were selling springer spaniels which looked about 4 months old, they may have a vet and vet nurse there but what about the pups socialisation and house training ?? I agree with you Lel that some breeders would be very proud to have thier pups on sale in Harrods, although not very good breeders I would imagine. I would also like to say that "the pet shop round the corner" might give much better care (I emphasize the word might) I used to work in a small family owned pet shop which sold rabbits, guniea pigs hamsters etc (brought from good breeders I might add, not Joe public). Every night we used to take home the bunnies and the guniea pigs and put them outside in a run so they could have a good run around.
Personally I think the sale of any type of animal should be banned from shops, I think this would halve the amount of neglect which happens when animals are brought on impulse. In the shop I worked in we would try to weed out the impulse buyers by reserving the animal for them and sending them away with loads of information to have a think, its surprising the amount who didnt come back

I can't remember the ins and outs of the programme, but i remember thinking that Harrods were being quite responsible.
As i said i DON'T agree with any shop selling puppies.
The pet shop you worked in may well be in the minority.
How many times do people go to the likes of Pets at Home and see unwell animals, being sold?
There is a pet shop not far from me that sells puppies. They are cooped up in a tiny little pen constantly, with very little to do, at least Harrods looks after them.

If they are KC registered the breeders run the risk of being banned as it is against KC rules to sell puppies through a third party(other than stud fee puppies)

I totally agree with you that the shop I worked in was most probably in the minority. The problem with shops like pets at home is that the staff arent really qualified, most of them know nothing about animal health/care etc. I was in a specialist reptile shop last weekend (i have to travel about 20 miles to get stuff for my snake ) there was a tennage girl in there looking at the snakes, lizards etc trying to decide what was cheapest to buy, she had a cheap tiny plastic tank thing which she intended keeping the creature in which in my opinion isnt suitable to keep any type of reptile in I really hope they refused to sell anything to her :(. It cost me hundreds to set up my snakes vivarium and now 4 years down the line im about to buy him his third vivarium which isnt cheap. People buy animals because they are cheap but dont realise you have to pay out for the rest of its life -- the same with dogs.
Rant over :)

Moonmaiden, thats interesting. Cos it's only pedigree puppies that they sell.

Do they say they are KC registered though ?? They might be registered with the Dog lovers thingy (cant remember what its called  )

A breeder who sold some puppies to the old Mayfield Kennels(who I believe are renamed & run the DLRC)was reported to the KC & they were banned from ever registering dogs showing etc for life
