I often leave my dog to dry off and rub the mud off her but every now and again I have to put her in the bath to shower her as she gets black and smelly. Today after her walk she was filthy so I stood her outside in the back garden and hosed her down, this was so much easier than showering her but only have a hose attached to cold water tap. The question is is it o.k. to hose her down in cold water as long as I dried her off thoroughly and she was allowed in the front room with the fire on?

I do if its hot outside. Then they race around the garden to dry off after i've tried to towel dry them :D

only if its a reasonably warm day.....dogs can feel cold too!

I don't see why not - mine will go in the stream whatever the weather - so what is the difference :)

There is no problem, aslong as you don't leave them wet when its cold!!!  I'm sure aslong as you give her the fire afterwars she won't complain :)

I'm afraid mine do get spolit of warm showers everytime!  and then they have a rub down, and then they get a dressing gound put on so water doesn't go everywhere and their coats don't fluff up! (setters with fluffy coats otherwise!!!!)

Should be fine, unless you use a shampoo, the water may well not go through to the skin so the dog will not really get cold and the coat should dry quicker than if a detergent has been used.

My hounds prefer to be hosed down in the garden than put in the bath, no way can I use our shower as it has glass walls. Do remember asking my OH to put a hot tap through the wall, but it was only about 5 years ago, so, of course it has not got to the top of the list yet ;)

Hi

I have a question:
My girl Luna is going through her first season (day 9 today) and she is still bleeding and she smells.

I was just wondering, could I put her in the shower, when she stops bleeding or should I wait until her season is completely finished?

I wouldnt like to get hosed down with freezing cold water and i'm sure no dog would either,my dogs would never come to me iff they knew they were going to have a freezing cold bath,it's bad enough for them now to have even a warm bath, you should make bathing as pleasant as possible for them as most dogs dislike baths and i'm sure they would even more if cold water was used Brrrrr! I used to have a huge rottie, who took up the whole bath tub, which made things very difficult, but i always bathed him with warm water in the tub, summer or winter!
My dogs get a warm bath and then get blow dried, unless it is hot outside, then they lay in the sun to dry off.
My dogs would shiver to death if i used cold water, cant you just give her a warm bath in the tub,it would be much kinder for your dog :)

Jeanette, you can bath your girl anytime you like, season or no season,i'm sure she would appreciate a bath,so she can feel fresh and clean again, but dont hose her down out the back ;) Use warm water,i'm sure she would appreciate it.

I agreed that most dogs dislike baths, but my sister's dog LOVES a shower (they don't have a bath).  When they return from a muddy walk and enter the house they say "get in the shower" and whilst they are taking their shoes and coats off, Max toodles off into the bathroom and stands in the shower cubicle waiting :-D

They were pleased last week when he managed to stay clean on his (long weekend) walk, saying how at least they won't need to bath him this week, and could get home and put their feet up with a cup of tea.  They arrived home and....Max walked straight into the bathroom and into the shower.  When nobody came to him, he started barking and wouldn't move.  In the end, they gave him a shower anyway, just because he obviously wanted it so much! :-D  They think it could be the rub-down with the towel afterwards that he enjoys so much..

Hi Christine

Well I don't have much choice there. I live on the 3. floor so she will be getting a nice hot shower in the bathroom. Its funny - she's a lab, but don't like being in the shower. Every puddle on our walks have to be runned through at least once! And she loves rainy weather but the shower NO THANKS!

I just thought you had to wait until she stopped bleeding, but if thats not necessary, then we are going to have a bath soon :-)

How often can she be bathed with shampoo? I'm thinking -  if I bathe her now then maybe its just a matter of days before she stops bleeding and perhaps needs another bath or what? I mean we live in a 2 room appartment

Bear with me Luna is my first dog :-)
