ive never tried this before so please be gentle,i have a 6month old boxer boy called chip and who for a few months now has been eating his own....pooh.
Ive tried the vets advice of pineapple but it still happens ive tried watching him when i let him out and getting to it 1st but when im out he tends to do it even when he isnt left for long periods of time,can anyone help?

There are many reasons why dogs perform this perfectly normal (if you're a dog) behaviour. Diet can be one - either a lack of enzymes, or an excess of protein in the diet of the producer of the excrement (this is often why dogs also eat cats faeces) A lack of enzymes can be countered by adding pineapple to the diet. A change to a lower protein diet or feeding less can solve the other reason.   If this is the reason then consider a change of diet.

It can also be learnt from the bitch if the pup is left with her too long. Or learnt through inapropriate toilet training if the owner tells the dog off after the event, the dog learns to remove the evidence - no evidence = no telling off. Stress when left alone can contribute. Positive reinforcement of correct behaviour and distraction work if this is the cause.

It can also be the efforts of an immature dog to remove evidence of his prescence to a dog he perceives as a threat. A lack of marking behaviour will accompany this, although is not exclusive in a castrated dog. Training to increase his confidence and ensuring he is getting appropriate reinforcement from his handler when out on walks (protection rather than enforced social interaction)

Finally (and possibly most seriously) it can be caused by an imbalance in the bacteria in the gut - this needs prolonged treatment by antibiotics. If the dog only eats his own faeces it's unlikely to be this, as most dogs with this condition will also eat faeces from other animals, such as rabbits, horses, deer etc.......

Try giving him a garlic tablet with his food every day, this should make his poo taste horrible and will put him off.  Tablets like 'Deter' are also good

Well I have a 8 month old Boxer who does the same, we have had her on a course of Deter and she stopped eating it until the tablets stop and then she started again. She eats our other dogs poo as well, we just have to be extra vigilant and clean up after her and the other dog.  Garlic sounds like a good idea because she wouldnt eat the pineapple (she can be fussy sometimes!!!).

Only prob is your other dogs poo will still be as tasty :)
I looked after a dog from work who was a terrible copraphagic and the garlic tablets worked brilliantly on him.  And like you said you just have to make sure there are no poos left for them to eat.  Thinks that's pretty much all you can do!

thank you for the advice will try anything,and everything will try by changing diet 1st then see how it goes,hopefully it isnt anything worse.
Is there any kind of special dietery supplement you think would be handy also?

This came up in Dog World a while ago and I seem to remember that one of the suggestions was a boiled egg every day - don't know if it works though.

dont think i could cope with the smell after he'd had a boiled egg every day he's bad enough now,was told boxers have terrible flatulence but didnt know just how bad....but like i said anythings worth a try Thank you
