Hello

I am new the board and wanted to get views on puppy farming.

I was looking at some web sites that campaign against it and wondered if what they write is true.  They seem to suggest that puppies sold in shops are from puppy farms, is this true, also that puppies sold from shops will have a bad nature.  How can they write this.  Have they 1st hand experience of this.

They paint  a very bad view of this trade.  I am not disagreeing with what they write, but is it really as bad as all of that.

When I visited Texas you read every day and hear on the radio of countless puppy farms and dogs that had been rescued or died.  There is little like that here, why not if it is as bad as these groups say.

Anyone here ever had 1st hand knowledge of one of these places.

I also read what puppy alert writes about rage syndrom and how they say it is bad in Cocker Spaniels, they imply (to my understanding anyway) that if your dog has a nasty side to it and it came from a puppy farm then it must be rage, and you must put it to sleep.  I am not sure that this is true, and writing that could make some people afraid.

I like the internet and there is a lot of good information to be had from it, but sometimes I wonder about these so called experts.  Do they really know what they write about.

Alsion,

Do a search on 'Puppy Farms' on here and you'll find what everyone thinks.  :)

Hi

Sorry did not mean to offend anyone, I was jut meaning that to make a sweeping statement about rage, or any other problem is a little rash, and can scare people if they only read one side of the view point. Perhaps when anyone writes about these things they should also put the other side of the issue.  let people make an informed view rather then being led along by the horns or whatever!!!

I also know someone who has 3 lab bitches  and she takes a litter from them each every year.  They are house dogs and well looked after, she does not keep a puppy for herself everytime. Would that make her a puppy farmer.  She would be mortified to think she was classed as one.

I will read the puppy farming thread and thank you.

Alison

Even if the dog you might buy from a pet shop may be happy and healthy I can guarantee you that the mother and father of that puppy are NOT.  They are kept in a 4x4 (if that big) cage 24 hours a day.  They get no exercise.  They are kept only for their breeding ability and when finished discarded.  The conditions these dogs live in, for the most part, are absolutely disgusting.  They are bought and sold at auctions with little or no care.

To be completely honest - what you've read is probably only the tip of the iceberg.  I know someone who personally went to an auction to 'rescue' a breed.  I have read her description of what the conditions were like and it made me sick to my stomach just to read/hear about it.  I can't imagine her being there.

The 'business' of puppy farming is appalling!

Hi Allison,
Dont get me started
Yes I know about puppy farms,. 40/50 brood bitches kept in crates, puppies sickly and malnourished, puppies scared witless when being carted off to pet shops, they have never been cuddled in their poor little lives.
I wanted a companion for my working ESS and unwittingly ended up at a puppy farm after seeing an ad in our local paper. I have never been so disgusted in my life. And yes I did take a puppy from there, straight to the bloody vets and her eyes were operated on the following day, blind for three weeks, vets did not know if they could save her eyes. She has congenital heart problems, Myastinia Gravis, and I am still the only person who can cuddle her.She had never been handled before I took her. She is the most loving, probably grateful, creature I have, including 5 labs
I have three breeding bitches, and no I am not a puppy farm. I DARE YOU TO GO SEE FOR YOURSELF BEFORE MAKING COMMENT!!!   My vets bills for her alone have come to over £5000.00 and she has been worth every penny, but it should never have had to happen.
And yes, although she is loving, content and totally devoted to me, she does have moments of rage, as if in a panic, and I can understand why.
And to really p**s me off she has an absolutely amazing pedigree, all FTC's.   WHY> WHY>WHY>

Oh I forgot to say, I did contact the SSPCA, but nothing done about it.
