Hi i have a 12 week old sibe bitch, Eli. She is absolutely gorgeous but the tip of one ear is floppy while the other is strongly erect. When i had her both ears were down then started to stand up but the tip of one ear has never stood up. I have another husky whose ears were down and went up and then back down ...... and then up again, but this isn't her whole ear just to the tip, which folds over.I am getting concerned as i had great plans to show her. Any advice would be great, Thanking all in advance. :) Leah and Eli

Hi leah, i know that alot of husky pups have floppy ears and they can go up and down and then back up. Usually they wll stand erected hopefully by 16 weeks. However, it can be possible for the ear never to stand up, this is a serious fault in the breed standard, and unfortunatley she wont be able to be shown or breed from. Just cross your fingers and hopefully time will tell.

Ears can be affected by teething too. Massage the ear every evening and keep an eye on it, probably will be fine eventually :)

I know about floppy tips. LOL. My Doberman pup has cropped ears and they are standing beautifully except for the tips. They're up, but weak. So, I've moved from using tampons, which I used for the whole ear to using a couple of q-tips and tape on just the top 1/3 to 1/2 of his ears. I put paper tape under the stronger tape so when I take it off, it doesn't pull his hair.  Yes, teething definitely can cause them to drop. But if your dog's ear is thicker and heavier at the top than my Dobe's, which it probably is I'm guessing, you can use a tongue depressor with paper towel wrapped around it and then tape. Back tape so the sticky side is out. It's a strong bandaging type tape. Then you put that it against his ear, padding the bottom and making sure it's taught against the stick. Then wrap with tape in a few places, being careful not to get it too tight, to cut off circulation. I don't know how your dog would go for this, as he's never had stuff on his ears before. My Dobe has had something on his ears since 7 weeks of age and so is very use to it. Plus, it's all padded and not uncomfortable.

But with your dog, he probably has a lot of hair inside, so you want to make the tape so it's not extreamly sticky or it will hurt when it pulls his hair. But it has to be sticky enough to hold it up without forming a lose pocket anywhere. I don't know if you're allowed to do that if you're going to show.

Or, better yet, ask your breeder. Maybe they'll just stand by themselves soon. I had a GSD who's ears stood by 4 months.

Good luck.

Carrie
