Was under a judge today, will not mention show, breed or name of judge (wasn' my own breed either!) and in the junior class were 3 puppies, 2 10 mth olds and a 6 mth old.  Well the older ones came 1st and 2nd and youngest came 3rd.  It then came to the challenge and in went open, in went post grad, in went junior (who is a puppy!)  And in came 6 mth old puppy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For starters the judge had asked the ages of the dogs and stewards had looked in cataloge for ages and When the judge was looking up the line I just politly said "you realise that my ones still a puppy" the reply was "no you said 10 mon...oh yes thats still a puppy!"

Two things really got to me, one the judge and stewards can't work out ages and the "puppy" was called in to the challenge BEFORE BOB had been handed out AND It couldn't possibly challenge for RBOB because it came 3rd!!!!!!!

Thats true.  But still simple rules and regs should be known, and if I hadn't of said to the judge my bitch was a puppy then Officially I cannot get the award as it has been awarded and all that can happen is the award taken away :O

In the junior class all the dogs under 12 months were puppies. Was there a puppy class? If not and all puppies had met in junior class the placings would stand so one of the older puppies who came first in the class would automatically be best puppy. The only puppy to be able to challenge would have been one in a lower or higher class who had not met with those from junior.
For example yesterday my puppy won minor puppy, so was unbeaten and went into the challenge for BOB. After that we had to challenge the puppy dog for best puppy in breed, as neither the puppy dog winner nor the minor puppy dog had met in a class.
I do agree it is very annoying when the judges or stewards do not know the basic rules and regs. I took over from an "experienced" steward at LKA one year. She had spent all the time before the breed she was stewarding came into the ring telling me how experienced she was. When I took over I trusted her to have marked any puppies and other such things in the catalogue. So imagine my surprise as I took over just as the judge had got to best puppy to call the puppies for the challenge to find there were about 10 of them who had not met. I then had to quickly apologise to the judge and exhibitor while I sorted them out as to which had been in which class and which had won what!
I am sure that these days judges are required to attend a rules and regs seminar before judging?

It was only a junior class, no puppy class!  All in junior where puppies so automatically I knew that whoever won got best puppy!!! 

The thing I'm most annoyed about is the 3rd (last) in junior was called in because the judge didn't know what age was puppy!!!

So the bitch I was handling had already beaten her aswell as the bitches brother who came 2nd!!!!

I understand how it should work, and with puppies from another class challenging (puppy-junior and minor pup-pup classes!) as I have had that before!

Yes it is required for judges to take rules and regs exam, saying that i passed it at the age of 13 so its not hard!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't understand your previous post so yes I agree you have every right to be annoyed. What should have happened is that the judge should have asked the steward, if the steward had not informed the judge which were puppies and which had been beaten.
Still even that has to be better than the judge I was stewarding for who said to me, "They are all so lovely I can't decide, which do you think I should place 1st?" !!!!!
Did you get your BP award?

Rox, you must allow the odd senior moment you know, the steward should have steered the judge in the right direction, the judge may have had their mind on what they were doing with the exhibits. I too passed the exam, marked 100%, as you say it is not difficult, but when you are in the ring you are concentrating on the job in hand and sometimes you make a mistake, or something slips your mind, you may find you have no trouble now but as you get older you have even more things going through your mind and rely on your steward to watch for the technicalities for you. Every dog you judge or see adds to your brains data base for that breed and that is all searched through when judging that breed, so it is not just age but the accumulated information you are bringing to bear on the task of sorting your exhibits, so please be a little more understanding, you were correct to point out the error but do you need to be so cross, we can't be perfect all the time, not even me :)

Jackie I can understand that people do make mistakes and I could understand if maybe there was juniors in the class but it was his reaction of "no you said 10 mon...oh yes thats still a puppy!"  He had rememberd!!!! Also that puppy, even if it was the only pup should not have been called in till BOB (and in that days placings RBOB) had been handed out.  That is what most annoyed me.  Also yes stewards are to blame partly aswell and is not only the judges fault!

Well done for getting the RBOB as well as BP!
I have just returned to showing after a break. Took my pup to his first championship show and won minor puppy so am qualified for Crufts. The last time I showed one of my dogs at a championship show was 1995 where we won our class. Both times it was at the FRS championship show. So we are both doing well. :-)

WOW well done.  Must be a BIG achivment with from what I have herd VERY large classes!!!! 

Now all I have to do is take my aussies to their first champ show (bath) and hope to qualify them!!!!!! hmmm

Yes different days!  red and white judge not in our favour so not going gundog day! 
Unknown Judge for the aussies so anything could happen but I havn't got an aussie puppy so should be ok!!!!!!....LOL

Do you mean it depends how my dogs do on the day depends on if they win??? Because if so its not true, your judge at Bath, although a friend of ours, does not like my type of red and whites which we can perfectly accept so we are not going to waste our day and money when we know we won't do anything.  It's nothing personal against the judge and we respect her views on the type she likes and how she enterpates the bred standerd!

Our Judge for Bath is not unknown-- Peter Bailey judged aussie dogs up at Working Breeds of Scotland in 2002 his wife Peggy did the bitches.

Peter has also judged our breed at Open shows so he has seen plenty of aussies.
