We have recently purchased an older great dane pup from a breeder, when we arrived home we thought her legs looked a bit strange, she seems bow legged at the front and her back legs her knees turn in and that makes her feet turn out, she also seems to lean to one side. she sometimes seems a bit stiff but not in pain, our vet thinks she may have some problems in the future, and may have the onset of arthritis, but the breeder disagrees, they think it is simply because she is large and still growing and her frame has not aligned yet, please can someone help?????

Hi there, new to chat so might take me some time, ok the pup is around 9 months old pretty large, she does walk funny, it seems as her legs are not hers or she does not know how to use them, she does not seem to be in pain but her legs are not straight, we did go to our vet and in his opinion she has a problem or will have in later life, the breeder does not agree, we are in a dilema we already have 2 dogs and if this one does have a problem we may not have the time to spend with it, also one of our dogs is only a puppy so wants to play all the time, any advice is gretefully received!

hi! well at 9 months she almost fully grown, about 90%.
Do you know whether she has had wonky legs all her life?
I know of a bernese puppy, which broke his leg when a puppy, he has a wonky leg, where the fracture has healed not straight.
are we talking about all her legs being wonky, or just one/two?

the breeder said they have had no problems with her and there vet did not see any a month ago, it is mainly her back legs, the front are sturdy, but both the back seem a bit weak and are definatly not straight, she throws her knee or hip out when she walks, the breeder said she has just not aligned yet, they are nice people and seem honest they think she will come ok?

its hard to say im afraid, espec as we dont know whats caused this.
Pups can seem wobbly whilst going through the leggy stage, but i dont think what your describing is normal, and i cant see it honestly "correcting" itself
Why did the breeder want to give her away?

unfortunatly i think you are right, the breeder said they just did not have time for her, they have said they will take her back and that they were not sure they did the right thing in sellin her in the first place, i think from what everyone is saying she will have to go back, pitty she is lovely, oh well i will be looking for a new pup now, we already have a 4 month mad as a hatter pup she needs a friend for company and to save my old dog. thanks for the advice:)

Hi you say that you have another pup of 4 months? and that you must now get another friend for it? i hope that you havent let the two pups just go mad together as this will do damage to the legs and no giant pup should be going mad with another pup.

Your 4 month old pup does NOT need another pup for company, what it needs is lots of contact with other adult dogs and an owner who is prepared to supervise and remove it from any contact that's getting out of hand - let two puppies loose together and they will rapidly teach each other all sorts of bad habits :(
Hi deedee, When looking for a new puppy, PLEASE make sure it is from hip scored and elbow scored parents, especially in large breeds. Research the average hip/elbow score of the breed you are interested in and see if the parents are along the lines of the average score. This way you have a better chance of getting a puppy who will not suffer from these problems. Hope all goes well for you. :)
