I took my 14 week old lab to training lessons, there were 3 other labs which were 18 weeks but were alot smaller than mine. My pup isn't over weight but looks it compared to the others and his head and paws are nearly twice the size. Pleasa could someone explain why. Thanks
I'm not a dog or lab expert but if your dog is not overweight then i would say it is just that your dog is bigger, were the parents big dogs? Breeds come in different sizes, we have been told that our pup will grow into a big sheltie, the way we like them but there are some really small dainty sheltie's around. OH's Aunt is a puppy walker for guide dogs with Labs and they have been a variety of sizes so i wouldnt worry.
I have a very big black lab, like people you get small and big, as long as he is healthy and not over weight i wouldnt worry.

All pups grow at different rates - the obvious question to ask you would be - were the other pups bitches?
Hi Lianne,
You don't say if your lab is from working or show stock. As I'm sure you're aware, labs from working lines tend to be a bit more on the lean side, but I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure that your boy is just fine.
Good luck
Ali :)
I was just thinking the same as Ali. Show lines are thicker set and stocky with large heads. Many working lines are smaller all over. What lines is your lab from. I doubt if you're overfeeding at 14wks.

Not certain about labs but as has been mentioned did you see both parents? My Golden Retriever is huge at 15 weeks but having met his daddy i'm not a bit surprised. His Mum is tiny so if I hadn't been able to see the Dad I might have been in for a shock!!

Dont worry too much about the size of your lab as long as he is not overweight, I have three labs, two from show stock, one from working stock, 10 week old male pup is very large heavy boned but well rounded, 3 year old black bitch, very lean, strong muscle, 5 year old bitch has large bones wide cavity chest and looks very heavy. If you see 3 year old and 5 year old together, the 5 year old looks heavy, but the lean bitch from working strain, is nearly two kilos heavier, this because the muscle weighs more. They are all different. As long as they are healthy and within weight range and height standard do not worry about it. A friend had a litter of pup recently and the difference at four weeks was very noticable, nearly 5 ounces between the lightest and heaviest, at 10 weeks you could not tell the difference, in a few months time they may all be very different. Enjoy your new pup.
