Hi guys,

I've heard a lot about this site and here I am.  I thought I'd give it a whirl.  I've owned dogs all my life and they ARE my life.  I am really keen on German Shorthaired Pointers and rhe Pointer (English) and cannot decide which I prefer.  I have done loads of research, reading and asking questions etc but am still torn.  Gundogs are newish to me as I have always owned working dogs and showed them, but I am really 'smitten' with the  GSP's & Pointers and this is the way I'm going to go.  I am not into field trials or HPR just the showing aspect and I am looking forward to introducing one of the above to my family in 2005.  I just can't wait.  Well anyway I thought I'd say hello and this site is excellent with some very seemingly knowledgeable people.

Regards Henny

Hi Henny and welcome, I'm pretty new too and yes, this site is very addictive. Would suggest you get yourself signed up on contract with your ISP, it's a lot cheaper in the long run. :-)

Hi Henny and welcome to CD.

I have 3 Large Munsterlanders (black and white hairy German Pointers) that take up a LOT of space in my very small living room. :D

Go along to some shows and see the dogs and meet the owners and find out which is best suited to you. I don't just mean temperament, though that's very important. Size, when read in a book, doesn't mean much, but seeing the dogs means a lot - you see them at their best at shows so if you could see them at their worst (ie muddy, smelly, wet ;) ) it might help you decide which is best suited for you.

Hi there again,

Thank you all very much guys for your welcome.  I have come across the Musterlanders and like them also but my real niggle is the choice of the GSPs or Pointer.  They are both marvellous and have a prescence about them I like.  I went to a show at Sacre farm, thornaugh Peterborugh and this has made it more difficult.  If I had to lean to one it would be the GSP, my wife leans towards the Pointer so this is also a factor.  Having the dog you want or disgruntling the wife...........mmmmmmmmm!  I would like to have a look at some HPR field trials even though this is not wear I want to be.  This may also show another side to the breeds I have not come across.  Where do I look to find out about where field trials are being held and do you have to be a member of an association?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks guys.  :-)  :-)

P.S I originate from South Africa and are not sure about all the rules here in England and hence feel quite a bit of an outsider.

Oh dear, disagreement with the wife!!!! :D

Personally think that the GSPs have a better build, but thats a personal preference!!!!

Just be sure you are aware of the VAST exercise requirements of both these breeds (when mature) :D One persons "lots of exercise" is another's stroll down the road :D

I have Weimaraners another of the HPR group.  The personalities of the GSP and the English Pointer are quite different and so be sure you understand what you are getting :)

Hi there, welcome to champdogs. I have only been a member for a few weeks but have found the forum really helpful and friendly. It is nice to know that there is always someone there at the other side of the message board who can give very helpful and very experienced advice. It is also a site with a sense of humour!! Please don't feel a misfit. We all were new once and I have made some fabulous contacts and "petpals". Hi Henny, I am the very proud owner of a liver and white flecked German shorthaired pointer 2 1/2 years old (girl). She is fantastic! She has a boyfriend a black and white English pointer. They run together on the moors. He is also a fantastic dog. Their characteristics are almost the same although the boy is a long range tracker/hunter while my girl stays close to hand and never lets me out of her sight! Good luck in your choice either one is a good investment as their temperament is adorable. they always give back unconditional -------------------------------------love!   Cracker

Hi Henny
Welcome to CD.
We have 6 GSPs and 2 GWPs who are all brilliant characters. Both are great breeds. I don't know too much about English Pointers though.
My son has a website about German Pointers. If you would like the address please PM me and I will give you details.
Whichever you choose it is a big decision as you have to live with your choice for a very long time.

Thank you all very much guys,

It seems strange but really obvious when I think about that there are lots of GSPs & English Pointers out there and because there seem to be none around where I live it is easy to forget.  I would be very interested in having a look at your sons website Sue, but have no idea what a pm is and I don't know how yo do it.

Cordially

Hi Henny,

Welcome to Champdogs.  I am pretty new to this myself.

I have 2 mischevious pupsters!  Nanuk is a 4.5 year old Samoyed and Tundra is an 8 month old Alaskan Malamute.  I certainly have my hands full I can tell you!!  They love each other to bits and Nanuk loves pulling Tun around by his tail.......I think she thinks it's a moving tugsy toy!!

Hi Henny I have a Pointer Plus Greyhound who is definitely a long range hunter :) think you should have a GSP for you and a Pointer for the missus ( not simultaneously but with a nice gap between pups!) To Private Message click the blue name of the poster you want to contact and it will show a Private Message heading in the top right corner. Have fun here.

Hi guys,

Thanks all of you for the messages and thankyou to Loreli for the PM reference, I'm learning all the time.  Its so nice to find a site like this where the like minded get together and chat its great, hats off to you Admin.

At the moment I'm at a impressionable stage with my choice of the English Pointer and the GSP.  I see a GSP and prefer that breed and then seen the English pointer and want that.  Maybe I'' end up with both! LOL :-)

I am actually from Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth in South Africa and liked a breed I used to see their called a "Thai Ridgeback"  have any of you heard of that?  Another nice breed.

Henny :-)  :-)

Hi again Henny
If you e mail me at sue@kavacanne.freeserve.co.uk
I will give you the address for the german pointer site which Adam has made. I don't think I am allowed to put it on here as it would be advertising.
