Hi the butcher my OH is doing some building work for has been given a bag of 20 fresh chicken wings, I have them in the fridge at the moment. I'm guessing its not a good idea to feed raw but as both myself and my OH are vegetarian I'm not sure which is the best way to cook them and do I need to remove all the bones before I can feed them to our dog.

Very many people feed raw chicken wings, bones and all, to their dogs with absolutely no ill-effects. If you are going to cook them (I would perssure-cook them in some water and feed the stock as well) then you must remove the meat from the bones as cooked bones can be very dangerous.
I would feed them raw, including the bones. If you do cook make sure you remove the bones.

Take the rough with the smooth
It's the cooked chicken bones that are dangerous for dogs. Many people feed raw chicken wings as treats or as part of their dogs daily meal.

out of interest, is it ok to freeze chicken wings, then defrost them to give to my dog ? the only chicken wings I've seen are in huge packs, and as I'm vegetarian and my dog is weeny she can't eat that many in one go !

I would have thought so, providing they have not previously been frozen. Just make sure they're thoroughly defrosted, before giving them to your dog.

My 9 wk old puppy is having raw chicken wings (& other food of course) She is thriving on them. I freeze them & take them out to defrost as needed.
The whole point of feeding chicken wings are to feed them RAW,cooked bones are dangerous and splinter which can cause huge intestinal problems,i'm a vegetarian too,my wee girls get chicken wings,lamb/pork ribs, lamb shanks, brisket bones plus the gross green tripe!
Lilylaru,my girls cant handle the whole wings,i give them the tips and cook the rest of the wing, strip the meat off the bone and feed it for dinner. What breed of dogs do you have?A few butchers have told me that it is alright to defrost and then freeze again,i bag the wings up in lots of 8,my girls(shih-tzu) get 4 each a day or you could lightly defrost them, just enough to break them apart and then re-freeze
Guest i bet your dog would love to gnaw on a wing, they are good for them and help keep their teeth clean :D But be sure to supervise the first few times as some dogs can gulp the whole wing down at once, some dogs cant recognise raw as real food and might not know what to do with it at first :p
Why dont you register, then you can ask as many questions as you want :)
good luck
christine
I'm giving them to four week old pups and whilst they can't manage a whole wing at the moment .they will be able to in another couple of weeks

IT is possible - but make sure you open the big pack and bag the wings up seperatly, then only defrost them as you need them (not several days worth at once). This is because, due to the large skin area they start to go off very quickly once defrosted :( If your dog is that small, she'll probably only eat one at a sitting.

Of course it is fine to freeze them, I buy my wings 15kgs at a time, bag them up and freeze them and defrost daily. In the summer when it is very hot, they often have them still frozen like an ice pop!
You can also defrost and refreeze, it is not a problem with dogs, I even feed meat with freezer burn, it is only unsightly not dangerous.

I'd guess by now those original ones are begining to smell a bit rank :(
I'm trying not to be totally sick here :D as i find it hard to handle raw meat now after 20 odd years of not having to (apart from tripe) but can anyone tell me what is likely to happen if feeding a chicken wing to an adult dog who has never had one before? Banya has had smoked bones which are stuffed and they are good for cleaning teeth and recreational purposes (my previous dogs used to get FAB smoked shanks but with the real marrow in, now that was a treat and kept teeth SO clean, but they disappeared round the time of the BSE crisis :( ).
I kind of want to feed her chicken wings but worry about taking the plunge. What a great reward they would be for working trials jumps etc...... ;)
Has anyone heard of or had any problems with feeding raw chicken wings at all?

Hi Lindsay, I have never had any problems with chicken wings and neither have many of my friends in Working Trials, Agility, Obedience or Showing; we all feed different breeds and have been doing so for several years.
Dogs who hve never seen a chicken wing generally fall into two categories; the first look at it for a microsecond, their pupils dilate and you can almost hear them saying "Yippee, real food at last" bolt it down and look for the next one.
The second look at the wing with great suspicion, they may examine it, even carry it around and not try to eat it, however after several mealtimes have come and gone without any food they feel they might as well try it and then they are usually converts and worst than the first! :D
I use chicken wings (cut up into smaller bits) for training purposes sendaways etc.
HTH
I am sure that there are people who have had problems with chicken wings as there are people who have had problems with all types of food, toys, etc etc
ps I never feed smoked bones and raw marrow bones are easily available from butchers; butchers have to pay to have their bones removed and so they are grateful for us to make use of them or you can shove a few pence in their charity boxes.

I feed chicken wings 1 or 2 times a week.My 2 year old Kasper used to swallow them!!! and then 30 seconds later regurgitate them and chew them up the second time round!!
They now all eat them 'nicely' ...even Frankie(now 9 weeks old)

Hi,
I have 3 Staffords, a 4 year old pregnant bitch, 13 month dog and a 6 month puppy bitch.
I have never fed them raw, I feed them Nature Diet and Burns.
I don't want to go the whole hog and change them over to the raw diet, but I wouldn't mind giving them chicken wings for their tea, 2 or 3 times a week. Would that be ok. How many would you recommend they had each for one meal.
Where is the best place to buy them, and do you get them fresh or frozen. Can you buy a big pack, and roughly how much do they cost.
Thanks for the help.
Michelle.

Hi
you could just try the odd one as a treat to start off with...either that or giving them as the odd meal will be fine.
I usually buy mine from Tescos,Morrisons or any other supermarket.Prices are normally about £1.20 for 24ish

You can buy them at most supermarkets usually for around £1.20 per kg,
Usually fresh but you can freeze them and then defrost them.
You can get big packs from some PAH stores in their freezers
When you feed raw you generally feed around 2 - 3% of their bodyweight per day, I would suggest if you want to give them for one meal than 2 x 3 joint chicken wings would be plenty, if not 1 x 3 joint chicken wing they weigh roughly around 100g. Some supermarkets sell 2 joint wings so give 3. Puppies can have more, they should be fed around 10% of their bodyweight or 2 - 3% of their projected adult weight.

Hudson has raw chicken wings, raw lambs ribs, pigs trotters, whole chicken carcasses ..... :D :D :D He poos less than before AND it is less smelly ;)
You could always bash the wing before feeding to make sure the bones are easily digested if you are worried about whether the dog will chew it properly or not ;) Hudson didn't know what to do with his first chicken wing..he carried it around crying for a while, then buried it before digging it up and chewing it ;)

Raw chicken wings are one of my dogs favorites,
To Tohme thankyou i have never given Toby frozen chicken wings before, because Toby is black he really feels the heat in the summer a frozen chicken wing sounds like a good idea to help cool him :)
