I would appreciate your views on worming during pregnancy.  I was planning to worm my bitch from day 40 with panacur 2.5%, but have been advised by several other people that I should wait until the puppies are born.  Would like to know what everyone else thinks!

I use panacur from the 40th day of pregnancy until 3 days after birth and have had no problems.  If you have used panacur in the past on your bitch and know she is ok with it then I would go ahead.

i would not i have heard to many storys, on this,

i worm my girls the first day of the season when they are going to be mated then not untill the puppies are wormed at 3,5 7,then i do the mum the same time as the puppies.

My bitch was scanned today, and her pregnancy confirmed.
They advised me to use Panacur from day 40 until 2 days after whelp, which I planned to do. Is there a problem with that. Surely they wouldn't advise me wrong.
I'd also be interested in other peoples views before I start treating.

I always worm before mating. I just don't like to give my bitch "stuff" when she's in whelp.

I have used Panacur on four generations of puppies now, no problems.  I did have problems with worming the pups so often as they advise in pups from my second generation, but now worm them at 3 1/2 and 7 weeks with no problems.

I am now on my sixth generation and have used Panacur 10% throughout the last third of their pregnancies - I have not noticed any problems

Glad i am not the only one :D  My personal feeling about the problems I had worming young puppies is that as i have been very thorough worming each generation that each bitch has fewer and fewer encysted larva, so that there wasn't enough in the pups for the wormer to work on, and that is what upset them.

As pups from Dams wormed in whelp should be about 98% worm free then I think that worming the way I do at 3 1/2 and 7 weeks is perfectly satisfactory and sufficeint.  I then advise new owners to worm at 11/12 weeks, and every month until 6 months of age, and then treat as adults after that.

I worm all my dogs when pups from a litter have left me.

I worm my bitches at 30 days after mating and then when the puppies are wormed at four weeks, but I used Panacur last time and all my puppies were ill. I wondered if it was too strong for them.

When giving Panacur to pups, in my experience,  you need to be very precise with the amounts.  I weigh and worm each pup individually and round down the amount to the nearest half ml rather than rounding up or guessing.  Since I have been doing this I don't have trouble with dire-rear in the pups after worming.

Have you thought about trying panacur paste for your pups. It's measured out in graduations so dosage & administration is easier than panacur liquid.  :)

I buy it by the litre (Cattle and Sheep version) but use a 1, 5, 20 or 50 ml syringe depending on which dog(s) I am treating.

Some breeds seem to react worse to panacur than others do.  I have never had the slightest problem with my Griffons, either the adults or the pups.  However I don't give the first worming medicine to the pups until about 3 to 3 1/2 weeks rather than the 2 weeks they recommend.  The paste is so easy for the pups to take as well.
