Whats your best ideas to help a puppy that is car sick? (22 weeks old)
I started out just sitting the dog in the boot of the car with out the
engine running, then started the engine. I can now get 2 miles with out
any sickness. However if I go over that the dog drools like crazy and
is miserable when we get to our destination. Which makes it very hard
for training classes as he only comes out of his shell just before we
pack up and come home again. Any ideas??
Liquid valerian seems to help alittle. Scullcap and valerian tablets have
no effect. Car sickness tablets have no effect either (boots own
brand).

Don't feed for a couple of hours before a trip. it might help to Put the dog in a cage and then cover it up with a blanket. this helped with my pup that was sick as soon as you moved.if you dont have a cage not letting dog look out of the window if poss, may also help. hope things get better my dog travels well now never sick.

I always found that feeding a ginger nut biscuit helps as ginger combats nausea.

Be careful with ginger ( i was car sick as a child) and this made me ten times worse but others it was fine. In my own experience of being travel sick i found ventilation best. The car might not be too warm for you but it might be for you pup. just a sugestion. Also do try to avoid food if you can. Have you put some bedding down so that he can get comfy? if its washable then all you do is put it in the machine. Try going to places that are really close in the car that are fun like walks etc.. he will asociate car with being fun not just vets/training although training is fun its also work too.

Bach remedies - scleranthus, rescue remedy

Homoeopathic remedies - cocculus, sepia, nux vomica (you may need to experiment)

herbal - small piece of ginger root

If the pup is in a cage put loads of newspaper on the floor, I mean at least an inch, don't ask me why but it does help with the sickness and if the worse happens it is easier to clean up.

PS - most do grow out of it.

I hope I don't get shot down for this, but my puppy was occasionally car sick, approx. every third car journey. (she used to sit on the back seat with a 'dog seat belt').  A friend of ours, a doggy person, saw her in the back one day, just after she had been sick and said "you shouldn't really leave puppies in the back seat, they can't see where they are going or get their bearings and that makes them sick, let them sit in the front whilst they are puppies, it really makes a difference".

I was VERY reluctant to do this, but my OH convinced me to try it, so we started putting her on my lap in passenger seat (with her doggy seat belt on of course).  From that day, she has never been sick once (about 7 weeks ago this was) and really enjoys going in the car now.

Obviously it isn't the ideal way to travel, especially as she gets bigger, so now that she is used to travelling in cars, we have a new car with a boot that has windows (forget the terminology!), and she's not using her cage indoors, I plan to start introducing her to travelling in the back in her cage.  But I was really surprised to find that putting her in the front with her seat belt on really worked.  I expect some people will be horrified at this and tell me off, but at the end of the day, with all the 'right' advice in the world, sometimes you just have to go with what works for you and your dog!
