Hello, myself and my family are looking to buy a LH weim in the near future.
i have succesfully located 5 breeders.
Im just wondering the hunting range of these dogs when off lead, do they range further than say a lab, but not as far as a setter would?

How hard are the bitches to train?
Are the bitches ok with other dogs?
oh and some kind of height range for a bitch would be great help.

any help would be much appreciated, i want to make sure i can handel one of these dogs, and give one a full happy life!

No doubt you will have done your research on the Weimaraner breed which means that you know that they belong to the HPR group of gundogs which means their temperament and behaviour is totally different to either a labrador (retriever group) or any of the setters (pointer and setter group).

I am surprised you are not aware of the correct height for a bitch, this would indicate to me that you have not properly looked into this breed which is absolutely essential before taking one on.

Their hunting range is around 5 square miles; ok this is a bit of an exaggeration but not much. :D   Because they are bred to hunt, point and retrieve they are a lot more independent than the other groups of gundogs as they must use their initiative to cover the ground in order to find game, point, flush on command and retrieve tenderly to hand.

The Weimaraner was originally bred to bring down wild boar and track wounded stag, to rid his master of vermin (cats and foxes) and protect him therefore they are not the wisest choice for a first time owner. Rescue is full of dogs who turned out to be too much of a handful for their owners!

Weimaraners are not the easiest dogs to train as they are a strange mix of extreme strong will and sensitivity; having said that they can be brilliant but it is a long term affair and must start from day 1.

If correctly brought up they are fine with other dogs.

How do I know all this?  Because I happen to have the most highly qualified Weimaraner in the country that just so happens to also be a longhair :D

Please be extremely careful which breeder you go to; I know all the breeders of LH Weimaraners in the UK (I do not breed myself). Make sure the sire and dam have been hip scored and have good temperaments.  Although there are less than 100 LH in the country the do NOT cost more than shorthaired dogs and they are not RARE just not as popular, there is a difference!

If you would like to have any further information why not join and then you can PM me.

Please think long and carefully before taking on one of these dogs; they are not for the faint hearted!
