Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Is my little girl growing up?
- By gemma1 [gb] Date 05.04.04 20:43 UTC
My little girl is a 5 month old cross breed. I have never owned a little girl before, so i'm new to all this.  The last couple of days she has gone abit clingy and wandering around alot. could this be the start of her season?  i thought it abit early.  I want to be sure as i have a 4 year old male and i dont want any accidents.

Any info really appreciated

thanks

Sorry, could you elaborate? you said she was clingy but then said she is wondering around a bit? Which did you mean? If she is off wondering, she could be impregnated by any dog - male dogs will know when females are in season way before you would. Physical signs of season are blood spotting and enlarged vulva, but male dogs would scent a seaon before this. you could always keep her on the lead, and neuter your male. Most vets wont spay before 6 months.
Sorry, cant remember at which age females start seasons - maybe some else can tell us?

Usually after they are 6 months of age

Hi Gem

It could also be, that all her hormones are racing around her body. Its doesn't necessarily have to be a season.
You'll know when its her season, your male dog will not leave her side. Your girl is changing from a baby to a teenager, remember how it was?

I also participate in a danish forum, and there I've read about some dogs suddenly starts getting a bit clingy and scared of things they never have been scared of before - like their own foodbowl.

My bitch had her first season at five months and she was certainly clingy.  I found my dog didn't take too much notice until about halfway through it on her first.

I would be careful and not leave her alone with your dog to be on the safe side. Is her vulva swollen, try dabbing it with a tissue to see if there is any blood showing.

Thank you so much for your replies.  No there isnt any blood on her, i have been checking.  And my dog isnt anymore interested in her the he was before.

I never leave them alone together when i go out anyway cuz my boy can be abit of a grump (like his father!) when he's not in the mood for a crazy puppy hanging off his ear!

But thanks again for all your advice, its all been noted!

Hi Sandrah

Well Luna finally started her season 6 days ago. She started to bleed, but didn't staart to swell until a couple of days later and gets a bit more swollen day by day, is this normal?

Yes - and it will take quite a while after the season finishes before she gets back to normal size :)

my girl is 10 mths old (Bullmastiff) she came into her first season yesterday and she too has been very clingy and loving. Is this normal and is it usual for her 1st season to be this late, i expected it a few months ago.

Yes & yes, some bitches are nearly 2 when they have the 1st season

Hi Daisy

Thanks

Is there a timeframe for how long they bleed?

This is the 7. day and she still bleeds. She is doing her best cleaning herself and the floor, but sometimes she misses some spots. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind! If I minded I wouldn't have chosen a bitch!
I'm just curios.

It can be up to 21 days or more but most bitches ease off between 11 and 16 days and are clean by about 21. Sometimes the discharge will stop and then start again for a few days. Once a bitch has had a few seasons they will in most cases settle down into a routine and you will then know what to expect.

My girl is on day 3 now and bleeding quite alot, she's not doing very well with the cleaning. She doesnt seem to notice the bleeding. As shes fawn shes getting in a bad mess on her legs and tail, i dont mind i just feel sorry for her, she looks confused as to what is happening to her. im going to try and wash her down later should i use any soap of sorts or just plain water as i dont want to give her an infection but she looks a rather messy.

Can they really bleed for 21 days? Wow. I only thought it was about a third of the period!

Well you learn everyday!

But I guess I'm just gonna takeit one day of the time.
