Hi :)
In a few weeks we will be getting our first leonberger puppy and when old enough we are interested in working him. Is there any one that can inform us on any local clubs in the Essex area and also what these classes intale. Thanks :0)
Hi Lauren
I can't remember any site addresses, but I did a general search on Leonbergers last week and found some sites about working them. Maybe one has details of where they do it, if you do a search.

Well if it is water sport why not try the Newfie clubs I know they have one in Essex but don't know if they will allow different breeds but would think at the fun events they may.
A quick search has not revealed what sort of work they are used for? Thought they were breed in the middle of Germany, funny place to develop a dog for water. Know they are a cross between the Newfie and the St Bernard but had always thought they were bred as guard dogs, no doubt someone can set me right please.

Glad you asked that, but what ever I would not wish to work one until it was mature they do seem prone to having very loose joints to they are at least 2 unless those in my area are not good examples of the breed.

so at what age do you think it is good to start training. i have not heard that they have this problem and i think it is not normaly a promblem in leonbergers and possible just a thing with the ones that you know. i will check this out. thanks
thanks:)

Would join and speak to the Leon club but swiming should not hurt him providing it is done with care and without other dogs until he is about 9 months but I am only guessing, so look out your wet suit and brush up on the breast stroke.
PS. you will need a room for him to dry out in, only know about Newfies but if you allow them to dry naturally it takes a good 48 hours but there are heavy duty dryers that do the job quicker and you will also need somewhere to wash of salt water if you are thinking sea, which is safer than fresh in the summer months.

Don't think I will Lauren, but there is a club in Essex for the Newfies. Try the Leon Club I am sure they will be able to help if there is anything being organised. Details
of the club hereincase you did not know, but I guess you do.

Yes he is massive, but thinks he's a lap dog, given half the chance he would spend all day sitting on my lap,all 60kg of him. Im very hapy with him and would'nt change him for the world. But you have to be verly firm with them, they will take the mick, let them know who's boss from the start, and you should'nt have many problems with him.

is he a show quality?
we have a 12 year old gsd and a 6 year old boxer
do u have any other breeds and how many leos do you have?
sorry for pestering but its nice to talk to some one that has a leo and has one from the same kennel name.
thanks lauren

No he is'nt but he did try for a while,it was hard to start with, but we just kept doing things to make him know we ranked above him eg pretending to eat his dinner before him .not letting him on couch unless asked(now he takes up the whole thing so that was a good one).making him move out of the way instead of steping over him.Now he is a big softy.but sometimes he can be funny with other dogs which is a shame.we have a female leo that is lovely a real angel would have 20 if they were all as good as her. we also have a small cross breed they all get on brilliant.Lhi and jam

don't now where the last few words came from!!
By lauren bailey
Date 05.04.04 19:24 UTC
dont worry about it :)
ive heard that most males try it at the start but as you said by being tough in its first year makes a big old softy in the future. as we wont to show him we dont wont to but if it come to it we will have to have him casterated but would rather not.
have you breed your leos or are you planning on breeding in the future?
thanks for your replies

By lauren bailey
Date 06.04.04 08:47 UTC
we are going to try our leo in most things to see what he enjoys the most. well we went to the brentwood show about 2 years ago and saw them and at that point in think my dad wonted one. he has done most of the research then the the followin year we meet a man who gaves us a breeders number. from may to now there has been 4 matings. some have obsorbed and some had a litter but my dad was not keen on the dad as it was the size of a bithch. but this time its all gone well and we will be pickin him up in about 3 weeks cant wait. we all really love the breed.
wot made you get a leo?
lauren Thanks :)
