Hi can anyone give me any advise on a c section and speying at the same time. only different vets seem to have different veiws. i am expecting a litter soon and have been thinking if she has a section i might get her speyed at the same time. my vet will do this, but i have heard others wont. i wonderd what experiences others have had.

It's possible that if she is spayed at the same time the lack of hormones will prevent her making milk and feeding the puppies.

Hi
Thanx for your reply. i still would like to know if others have come across problems with having the bitch speyed at the same time regarding the bitches health. i understand she could have less milk butm is it dangerous to her health combining the two opps. as surly having two seperate opps is just as risky. very confused

My bitch was scheduled for a c-section spay, but only if it didn't endanger her. Well all went fine and she had both. I did have to hand feed for the first 48 hours till her milk dropped fully, I made sure all pups nursed alot and that brought her milk down pretty fast. I just helped out the first couple of days. I also had an oxytosin swab in her nose the second day and after that her milk did come more. My vet wouldn't give a shot because she had a section and was spayed and she said she didn't need the shot the swab did the trick just fine.
As long as you trust your vet will only do both ops if all is well, and if not will spay at a later date. this we discussed before she went in.
Good luck :)

Thanx dollface
I am gutted, i took her today for scan and there is nothing. this is the second time she has been mated and not caught. Vet seems to think theres nothing wrong, but advised a blood test and antibiotics, also a new jab they can have at the beginning and end if pregnancy he seems to think well be lucky next time.
i was so hoping for a puppy to show, it will be nearly another year i have to wait.

Hi Mollie. I know exactly how you feel as my bitch Chloe was supposed to have pups easter weekend. Like you I did a scan and there was nothing. I also had talked about getting her speyed at the same time if she needed a c-section. My vet recommended it but didn't say anything about the milk not coming down. This is the second time she's missed in a row, too. I've decided to give up as I already have her son who is doing ok in the ring. At least I can buy in a bitch pup in the future. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and hope that you finally get a pup in the end.

Very sorry to hear that Mollie :(

a mate of mine bred a litter (SBT's), his bitch needed a c section and he got her speyed there and then (on the advice of his vet).she got over it in a hurry and had no problems at all and never had trouble with the litter either.

I had my bitch spayed after a C section. The Vet said that the ovaries were not responsible for Milk production (forget which hormone secreting glands are) so it wouldn't make a difference.
The bitch reared them no trouble, though we did loose one that never got going well.
Have known bitches whose wombs ruptured and had C section, so obviously spayed, and they to reared pups without trouble.

Thanx everyone for your replys. i still look at her and imagine there just might be something in there, but i saw the scan and nothing, so clinging to if only, it was wrong.
I have thought about it, and decided to buy in a nice little bitch, so i can get my new hobby off the ground, i seem to have been waiting forever for my own pup. fingers crossed, i spoke to a really nice lady on friday and if all goes well she has a litter due in about eight weeks and has said she will reserve a pup for me. so im well excited. i am taking my bitch to ringcraft and practising with her,so again thanx for all your replys and do let me know how it goes regarding your pups.

I have had two dogs spayed at c.section time. No effects really. I was told aftewards about milk problems but thankfully we never had this problem. But they were not first litters I dont know if that makes any difference, and the bitches took to their pups well.

I asked my vet about this once, and he advised waiting till later. Nothing to do with the milk, but more to do with the increased blood supply to the uterus and reproductive organs during pregnancy, so he would be happier with a spay at a later date due to the risk of haemhorrage.

Hi Molly
I would advise against it. I was advised to have my girl speyed after a c section 3 weeks ago which I did. She was OK a day after and the next day was very ill - took her to the vets immediately and they kept her in on a drip an operated again that night but she didn't make it, she had a massive haemorage and I was told that it was due to being spayed and c-section at the same time - just too much for her
